** All about Virgo
Virgo has been called picky and critical for far too long. Well, here's where it ends. This sign's certainly into details -- there's no doubt about that. But that doesn't mean that these idealistic, humble folks don't care about others; in fact, it really means that they care so much about helping everyone look, sound and be their best that they're willing to risk coming off as 'picky' or 'critical' to do it -- which is quite a generous sacrifice.
Truth be told, however, Virgo's good at sacrifice, and at making lemonade out of lemons. These extremely tender hearts are always willing to help, and their sharp focus allows them to take charge of even the toughest situation. So if you're a Virgo yourself, you know that when you're that good at grasping particulars, it's quite natural to see flaws -- hence that reputation for being nitpicky. But if it weren't for you, the rest of us would miss the trees for the forest, so don't ever let anyone put you down for your keen eye! We all need troubleshooters in our lives, people who are able to see the potential problems in a situation before they develop -- and that's definitely Virgo. So get out there and find one of these meticulous folks; enjoy a lesson in careful observation and tell your pal that their ability to appreciate minutiae really is precious.
When it comes to relationships, Virgo is as devoted as a sign can possibly be. These sincere souls are willing to do whatever it takes, whenever it's needed, to let their beloveds know just how dear they are. And if you're close to a Virgo, you can attest to the fact that they're the proud bearer of one of the keenest wits in the entire zodiac, thanks to that sharp eye and those quick, accurate comments. As a partner, this sign's as faithful as they come -- like all the earth signs. (Don't forget: Being earthy, after all, means that Virgo was given the gift of fully appreciating the sense of touch and the importance of closeness.) So don't hesitate to reach out and touch a Virgo you know and love -- and let them know how valuable they are to you.

** Your Starcast for August 23 to September 22
Yes, your dreams really can come true! As the Sun enters Virgo on August 23, it's time to become clear about what you want and then take the necessary steps to achieve your goals. You'll get all the help you need during the transit of the Sun through this earthy sign as serious Saturn also enters Virgo, a major transit that will last for the next two-and-a-half years. Yet, it will be essential to keep your mind, body and spirit balanced with a Pisces lunar eclipse on August 28 when emotions will be high in this sensitive sign. A solar eclipse in Virgo on September 11 with Uranus, the planet of change, opposing indicates that anything can happen. One thing is for sure: as Pluto, the planet of power and extremes, turns direct on September 7 and Venus, the planet of relationship, turns direct on September 8, you won't feel lukewarm about anything! Take a deep breath and make sure you don't over react to anything as we end this solar period with a dynamic T-square between the Sun, Pluto and Mars as the Sun squares warrior Mars on September 17, followed by a square to Pluto on the 19th. By September 21, Mars opposes Pluto and everyone will be confronted with the choice of doing something amazing or becoming involved in power battles. This is a good time to be reminded that through all of life's ups and downs, it's not so much about what happens but how we handle ourselves.
August 23: Sun enters Virgo
Virgo is a sign that has a beautiful blend of idealism and practicality. It's why so many entrepreneurs are born under this sign. Earthy in nature, yet with a highly adaptable sensibility, Virgo reminds us that dreams are attainable when you roll up your shirtsleeves and commit to the work required. What a great time to write down your goals and begin the process of manifesting them! Why not decide something now that you want to accomplish by the end of the year -- and then accomplish it? You can do it!
August 23: Mars opposite Jupiter
This air/fire mixture is a bit flammable! Mars currently occupies the air sign Gemini -- a time where few people are at a loss for words. Big, expansive Jupiter is in Sagittarius, a sign of beliefs, philosophies and religions. Mars and Jupiter are on opposite sides of the fence in this opposition, and you and the world are likely to be very aware of your differences in ideas, beliefs and points of view in general. Of course, what you do with that realization is what counts! Try to not take on too much or open your mouth before you've thought carefully about what you want to say. Dial back on the need to convince anyone to come around to your point of view. Instead, why not celebrate diversity? It would be a boring world if we were all exactly the same!
August 28: Lunar eclipse in Pisces
Full Moons tend to amp up the emotional life in general and when the full Moon is also a lunar eclipse, the emotions are dialed up even more! Now add in the fact that this lunar eclipse is in Pisces, the most sensitive sign of the zodiac -- and, well, you get the idea. So first, don't overreact to anything; dramatic events are a part of eclipse times, and this one won't be any different. With the Virgo Sun opposite the Pisces Moon, expect to hear about lots of situations having to do with health issues, whether it's people, animals or the planet. Eclipses are highlighters and bring your awareness to what needs your attention. It is time to get a plan together to make the changes that will make you feel healthier, happier and more emotionally content. Get some time alone and slow down! Connect with your spiritual self; watch a sunset, meditate or listen to a beautiful piece of music. What inspires you? It's time to prioritize your dreams.
This full Moon will most affect those born August 26-30, November 25-29, February 22-26, and May 23-27.
September 2: Saturn enters Virgo
Every two and a half years, Saturn enters a new sign. In Virgo, the sign of work, health and service, it's time to conduct a thorough analysis of all the important areas of your life and relationships, including the one with yourself. Ask yourself what is working and what clearly isn't. Are you running your schedule or is your schedule running you? It's time to take yourself and your life more seriously. If you know your chart, pay special attention to the house where Saturn is transiting.
September 5: Mercury enters Libra
With the communication planet in diplomatic Libra, the emphasis is on fairness and justice making this a wonderful time to smooth over any recent conflicts. Extend the olive branch when you can, and pay it forward when possible by extending kindnesses to others. With so much planetary intensity this month, we will all appreciate those who can rise above the squabbles!
September 7: Pluto turns direct
Pluto turned retrograde last March 31. This retrograde period comes to an end now as Pluto turns direct. These last few months have seen intensity and power issues ratchet up and you may have felt that there is a lot at stake. Although this intensity can drive people to extremes, letting go of beliefs that don't serve you (or the world) has been a part of this long retrograde period. Now, as Pluto moves forward again, you have the chance to put into practice everything you've learned about power and beliefs and how they affect your life. Hopefully you've transformed your life during this period to more accurately reflect who you are now. If so, your own sense of empowerment will be at an all time high. Continue to throw out old disempowering beliefs and let go of old situations to take full advantage of this turn-around time.
September 8: Venus turns direct
You've had your relationship review; you've revisited your past. You've withdrawn to evaluate how you are relating to yourself and to see if your values are in alignment with how you are living your life. Perhaps you and your partner spent time with a counselor. Now it is time to assess the changes that have occurred since the Venus retrograde last July 27, and put into practice everything you've discovered about yourself and your loved ones during the retrograde period.
September 10: Venus quincunx Uranus
Venus in Leo is fun and creative -- really the life of the party. Yet, sometimes we all have to put our entertainment needs aside to tend to larger concerns. Events, announcements or declarations throw you a curveball that will keep you on your toes. This may be about your desire to be free and independent; it may be about needing to re-align your values. You'll know which by the end of the week.
September 11: Solar Eclipse in Virgo
Last September, in 2006, a solar eclipse in the last degree of Virgo reminded you (and the world) to take care of how you were taking care of yourself --whether it was food and water purity issues, or tending to your emotional, mental or spiritual health in some way. Now, a second Virgo solar eclipse brings your attention yet again to this area and you have a chance to see if you have been listening to yourself! Solar eclipses occur at the new moon, which represents new beginnings, and this is a big one since eclipses signal dramatic events. Additionally, eclipses occur at the north or south lunar node with the north node representing the future and the south node, the past. Since this eclipse occurs at the south node, the past is highlighted and anything that requires your attention will be extra obvious. It is time to take care of those things you've been meaning to get to that need your attention. Pay special attention to any overwork issues that can cause repetitive injuries and stress-related illnesses. What a great time to get an exercise program together and to eat healthy. It's time, isn't it? This eclipse contains a major aspect pattern called a mutable grand cross, which symbolizes people working at cross-purposes. Take your own inventory to help you avoid being unduly critical of others.
This new Moon will most affect those born September 9-13, December 9-13, March 7-11 and June 7-11.
September 13: Mercury sextile Jupiter
Mercury loves facts and information. Jupiter wants to understand that data within a broader framework. Jupiter synthesizes various pieces of information that Mercury provides and makes them mean something. With Mercury's placement in Libra, and Jupiter's in Sagittarius, expect conversations about how to enhance relationships and the way people get along by grounding them within a moral or ethical context. The sextile opportunity aspect gives everybody a chance to deepen their understanding.
September 17: Sun square Mars
Sometimes we can work at cross-purposes by acting in a way that doesn't really help us. There's a lot of heat in this square, so make sure you don't take your own stuff out on others. Mars in Gemini can symbolize harshness in speech, while the Virgo Sun can get hyper-critical. Cool your jets and take a cold shower. Make sure you get some perspective before you do anything you'll later regret.
September 19: Sun square Pluto
When the Sun squares Pluto, people in positions of power, or to whom you have given power, have strong beliefs about what you should do and how you should show up. You may feel like you are not getting the recognition you deserve and the tendency is to get involved in a power struggle. Instead, focus on solidifying your own power-base. The most important thing you may do this week is to ask yourself if you are in an appropriate work or life situation. Whenever Pluto in Sagittarius is involved in an aspect, it's about letting go of a belief.
September 21: Mars opposite Pluto
With Mars in opinionated Gemini and Pluto in belief-driven Sagittarius there is a tendency to engage in a war of words. Morals, ethics and issues of right and wrong are highlighted making this a potent time for lawsuits. Mars is the planet of action; Pluto represent the "powers-that-be." Although they are on opposite sides of the fence, they are looking at each other. This aspect can represent power struggles or, for the enlightened, it is time to take actions based on personal philosophies without thinking anyone else needs to think or believe what you believe. If you know how to sidestep control freaks and bullies, now is the time to show off your talent. Then, use the power of this aspect to do something amazing.
Enjoy the Sun's transit in Virgo!
** Astrolesson: Aspects and Orbs
A fun way to describe (and to hopefully make the sometimes-complicated science of astrology easier to learn!) signs, houses and planets is this: the planet is the actor; the sign is the costume and the house is the stage. But, the aspects are what make a chart come alive because aspects represent the dialogue. Who gets along and who is bickering and will they resolve their differences? Just like any good play or movie, we all want to see not just who they are, but how they relate to each other and how everything turns out.
Aspects address the angular relationship between planets and points in the zodiac. Let's try to simplify: The circle of the zodiac is 360 degrees (as all circles are!) and each sign is 30 degrees. The planets are placed in the circle of the chart and form angular relationships to each other. The angle between the planets describes what kind of conversation they are having.
The major aspects are conjunctions (at 0 degrees, or planets that are at the same degree), sextiles (60 degrees apart), squares (a 90-degree separation), trines (120 degrees in distance) and oppositions (180 degrees apart). Squares and oppositions are known as 'hard' aspects. The energy from these aspects generally represents challenges to overcome, or a balance that needs to be found. Sextiles and trines are considered 'soft' aspects. Their energy is generally harmonious and beneficial. The energy resulting from a conjunction can be either helpful or difficult, depending upon the planets involved.
A Stellium is a unique aspect pattern that involves three or more planets all next to each other in a series of conjunctions. Some minor aspects that are often considered when viewing a horoscope are the semi-sextile (a 30-degree separation between planets) and the quincunx (a 150-degree angle). The quincunx is considered a major aspect by many astrologers. Other minor aspects are addressed by fewer astrologers.
Currently, Saturn, the planet of building, and Neptune, the planet of dissolving, have been forming an opposition (180 degree) aspect with Saturn in Leo and Neptune on the opposite side of the zodiac in Aquarius. As they have been transiting through their respective signs, the aspect has been in orb (close to the exact aspect) from the summer of last year and throughout this year. Yet, they only formed an exact aspect three times: on August 31, 2006, February 28, 2007 and June 25, 2007.
The term 'orb' simply describes that the planets are in the vicinity, still speaking to each other, but are not at the same exact degree. For example, this month as Saturn transits from 25 through 29 degrees of Leo, and Neptune is still at 20 degrees and retrograding down to 19 degrees of Aquarius, they are moving out of orb of the opposition. This means that their conversation is getting fainter and by the time Saturn enters Virgo on September 2, they will each be having conversations with other planets and so much of the uncertainty you have been experiencing will diminish.
The orb of an aspect changes depending on each astrologer's preference. Some astrologers use a narrow orb: only two or three degrees. Other astrologers use wide orbs: such as 10 degrees. This is a matter of interpretation and there is no strict rule. It is a matter of personal opinion in deciding whether or not two planets can be considered within the orb of a specific aspect. The easiest way to think about it is this: the more exact the aspect, the louder the conversation!
