Since August 23, we’ve been working with a new energy, and it is one that will grow in our awareness and shape our consciousness for the next three years. This is the energy of Scorpio.
Threads from the Past
Scorpio is a Fixed Sign (along with Taurus, Leo, and Aquarius). The last time we had an emphasis in the Fixed Signs was 2007. At that time Saturn was in Leo (starting July 2005), and earlier in the decade, these Signs were regularly activated. Now that Saturn and the eclipses are entering Scorpio, it’s time to get ready for the walls that confine us to move!
However, since 2007, if you have planets in Cardinal (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) or Mutable (Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, Pisces) Signs, I don’t have to tell you that you’ve been in the hot seat! These two sets of Signs have been very active, while the Fixed Signs have been cooling their heels wondering what all the fuss is about. You Fixed Signs, your time has come to find out!

The Cardinal and Mutable Signs
Cardinal Signs are about identifying a need and taking action to fulfill it, an initiating role that involves directed focus and movement to start something new. We all feel the urge to jump into new things, often before we know whether it’s a good idea or not. Mutable Signs focus us on the energy of integration and completion, creating wholeness. If we’re Mutable, we learn to be responsive and flexible. We’re good at putting out fires.
The Fixed Signs Work with Structures
The Fixed Signs teeter between these two extremes of the cycle (beginnings and endings) to stabilize and structure — to hold things together. It is about building structures to meet current and anticipated needs, and removing old structures that stand in the way.
If you are a Fixed Sign, you are the one who builds and decorates the house, then sweeps it clear of all its furniture to start again. But not without careful deliberation. Fixed Signs are cautious. It takes time to move mountains, and you can’t waste any energy in fruitless effort.
As we begin to work with Scorpio, we will revive patterns and situations that have been left incomplete, particularly from 2000-01, 2005-07, and Fall 2010. If you have planets in the Fixed Signs, your rest period is over. You can look forward to more opportunities, a faster learning curve — and having to get out of your rocking chair and dance!
Mars’s entry into Scorpio signals a change that was actually foreshadowed by Mercury’s transit through Leo from mid-July through the end of August. Mars will echo and embellish our experiences of this summer as it travels through Scorpio August 23 – October 6. If we focus a keen eye on the events of this six weeks, we will see the story threads of our next two years spun into existence in the form of scenarios, the hint of adventures to come, and the revival of old goblins and gifts from our deep karmic/ancestral/current-life history.
In the Fixed-Sign mix, Taurus builds, Leo inspires, Aquarius humanizes; Scorpio transforms. Scorpio takes the structures of opposite-sign Taurus and shakes them up — tests them to see if they are strong, functional, and enduring. If not, they are transformed, in a way that suits the need. If required, Scorpio is prepared to completely destroying the old forms.
What Parts of Your Life Need an Overhaul?
Since it has been so long since we’ve had a strong Fixed energy to blow down our old houses, it’s not surprising that there are some areas of our life that will need a complete overhaul. We are about to get it. Mars will send out the call that it’s time, but it will be Saturn and the Nodes (read that as: eclipses) that will do the hard work of scraping us away from our attachments.
We Receive a New Relationship Directive.
Since October 2009, we’ve had a mission with our relationships: They must deepen or die. Some relationships have split up, some have transformed into something more meaningful, while some of us have formed completely new ties.
Reciprocity and meaning/purpose were most important to us for three years, but now that is about to change. Now, as Saturn enters Scorpio, our mission segues to finding true depth and intimacy with our partner. We may be astonished to discover that we know very little about the partner we’ve been sleeping with (or working with, or friends with, etc.) in some aspects. We may become aware that we don’t really know how they feel about some things — and now that’s not good enough. We want to overcome our isolation, share our feelings, and truly merge our spirits on whatever level the relationship operates.
This is the perfect follow-up to the events of the past three years, which seem to have brilliantly conspired to lead us to love each other better and more and more meaningfully. We’ll want to know our purpose, to transform the world around us in some way, and to explore the mysteries of what we don’t know about each other. It’s as if each of our relationships is a puzzle that we want to put together with our partner, in love, joy, and discovery.
Get Out of the Rut and Be Free!
Regardless of how we experience this new Scorpio focus, we will be searching out areas where we have become stuck in a deep rut and figuring how to get out. This will be true in every aspect of reality. Now we have hope of changing deeply ingrained habits that before we lacked the will to change. So get ready, get set — and get changing!
