Mercury retrograde is a period when we can connect to another perspective and use that to re-visit a situation or a creative project, evaluating it through a different lens. The first two letters of "retrograde" — "re"—lend a clue to finding the juice in moving through this stretch. It’s a time where we greatly benefit from re-editing, re-writing, re-creating, re-examining, re-calculating and all the other activities that allow us to meet a situation with a fresh view.
Mercury retrograde is a time when inner communication flourishes. Therefore, try to allocate more time than usual to quiet thinking, reflection and meditation. Journaling and collaging are also great activities since they offer a free-form container into which you can pour your self-expression.
One of my favorite Mercury retrograde exercises is non-dominant handwriting. Consider a question you’ve been pondering. Then contemplating the answer, use your non-dominant hand (aka righties use their left hand and lefties use their right hand) to write out the answer. While your words may look like chicken scratch, you’ll likely be surprised to see the new wave of insights that they contain. The reason? Using our non-dominant hand is said to allow more direct access to our subconscious and intuitive mind.
It's still important to be diligent when communicating with others during Mercury retrograde. It’s also worthwhile to make sure technological and transportation apparatus are really in good working order. And yet this period is about much more than just double-checking typos and worrying that your computer may go awry.
It has amazing value for self-discovery. And if you arm yourself with some Mercury retrograde perspectives and strategies, not only will you move through this period with less tension but you’ll also be able to better connect to the wisdom insights that are actually available.
