Emotional Mess on Full Moons? How to Deal Without Stuffing Your Feelings

The full Moon arrives once every 29.5 days, and even if you’re not aware of its calendar date, you more than likely sense its powerful presence. How often have you been weepy, angry or just riled up only to find out that the full Moon loomed large in the sky on the very same day?

The power of the Moon cycle is not to be trifled with -- the word “loony” gets its etymology from “lunar” for a reason. We all feel a bit crazy as the Moon cycles from new to full and back again. Hospitals tend to fill up on full Moons, and recent science has validated that humans get less sleep when the Moon is full. No wonder everything feels so intense!

The good news is that you don’t have to accept that you’re going to be an emotional mess on the next full Moon. There's a healthy, targeted way to deal with the deep energy that’s released at this time of the month. We too, are “full” at the Full Moon --full of feelings, fears, hopes and emotions that need to be released. The wrong approach to full Moon energy is stuffing your feelings and going on with your day. That won’t end well for anyone.

We live in an on-the-go, social-media obsessed culture, where we barely stop to rest and often find ourselves working 10 to 12 hours a day. Under these conditions, the full Moon should be a respite, an island in the storm of our crazy lives. Designating the day (or evening) of the full Moon as a time for ritual, meditation or just a hot bath with soothing essential oils, this can make a huge difference in the way you process the full Moon’s energy. If you just treat it like any other day, it’s always going to be a challenge.

Start by noting when the Moon is full, and marking it on your calendar with a circle. You can find out when the Moon is full on Astrology.com's Moon page, or by getting a Moon calendar app or a little booklet. They’re handy!

Try to set aside a few hours of quiet contemplation on the day of the full Moon, whether early in the morning or in the evening. Even if you have to do it after you finish work, before the kids have woken up, or after you’ve put them to bed -- make it a priority in your life. Consider the Moon your therapist in the sky.

If it’s clear outside, start your ritual by gazing at the Moon for a few minutes (either through a window or even better -- directly under it, standing outside). This is healthy for your body and mind. It can help you physiologically tune into the Moon, which can benefit your hormones and circadian rhythms.

Whether you choose to take a bath or just sit quietly in meditation, consider following up your ritual by writing in your journal. If you don’t have one, start one! Call it your “Moon Journal.” Note how you feel, what you feel like you need to express, what you want to release from the previous cycle, going back to about 29 days to the last full Moon.

Creating a container of sorts for your full Moon experience can help you to feel grounded, anchored and safe. The fringe benefit is that you’ll grow psychologically, learn deep truths about yourself, and in turn improve your relationships.

Allow the Moon to be your guide, not your enemy, and you’ll be amazed at how it can improve your life -- no matter if it’s new, full or anything in-between!
