If you’re a woman, you know how difficult it sometimes is to decide to what to wear. I remember asking my husband what he thought of my outfits whenever we had a party to go to. Of course, like many husbands, he always told me I looked great. It was smart of him!
What clothes you choose to wear makes a statement about what you want to express about yourself. If you have a business meeting, you will probably choose a more conservative business-like look. If you want to look sexually attractive, there’s always a little black dress hanging somewhere in the closet. I have friends who love to dress up in long skirts and layers of colors for a wild gypsy look to express our unique individuality. It’s all about attitude, isn’t it?
Clothes also express what you are feeling, especially in the colors you choose to wear. When you don’t feel comfortable in our body or you’re depressed, you might find yourself wearing a lot of black, since black can make you feel like you’re ‘covering up’. Red of course can shout out, ‘bring it on’! A beautiful green can make you feel fresh like the new leaves of Spring. Jewel-tones or pastels say something about your mood.
As we all know, clothes are more than just clothing.
So what happens when we dream about clothes? What are those dreams trying to tell us? When I was in college, I used to have recurring dreams about discovering rooms full of clothes. Some were clothes I actually had while others were wonderful concoctions of fabric and color. The interesting part of those dreams was that I had so many choices to choose from. Being in college was more than just studying. It was, for me at least, how do I relate to other people?
What did I want to wear? That was the problem. The dreams told me that I could choose whatever attitude I wanted, since I had so many. When we’re just starting out in life, we often don’t know what attitude to take in different situations. We try to match what we feel about ourselves with what is expected of us. Sometimes the choices can be overwhelming!
Years ago, while I was waiting to hear about an important writing contest I had entered, I dreamed that I was trying to find the right outfit to wear, and was trying on many dresses. I finally decided on a beautiful red dress. I was going with my passion instead of my fears. I wanted to adopt the right attitude about why this contest was so important to me.
In many fairy tales, like Cinderella, the heroine goes to the king’s ball dressed in magical dresses that are as golden as the Sun, as silvery as the Moon and as sparkly as the Stars. These dresses symbolize types of consciousness: rational, imaginal and spiritual. These dresses have to be integrated into Cinderella’s conscious – that prince she’s dancing with is her own animus or masculine side. She’s not waiting for a man to rescue her; she’s working on becoming whole herself!
So next time you have a dream where you’re trying to figure out what clothes to wear, look at what attitude you’re trying to express. And then go out and express yourself!
Until next time,
If you have a dream you’d like interpreted, please send them to me!
