Five is one of my favorite numbers. Like the pentacle, the five-pointed star of Venus, the number five takes the groundedness of four -– the four elements of earth, fire, air and water -- and adds spirit to the mix.
That’s why five is regarded as a mystical and magical number. While there’s an essential human quality to five -- we have five fingers and toes, five physical senses -- there’s something extra added to the stability of the material world. That extra something takes us higher into the realm of spirit.
The number five is a prime number, meaning that it cannot be reduced to anything else. That makes it primal, original and basic to our makeup. Five is a circular number, constantly producing itself in its last digit when raised to its own power. Slap me five!
The medieval knight, exemplified by King Arthur’s nephew Sir Gawain, held to five virtues: generosity, courtesy, chastity, chivalry and piety. Maybe we need to ask our men to get back on their horses and take up Gawain’s shield with its symbol of the Pentacle on it. Gawain was known to love and honor women!
Five is another number that moves like three. It knocks the stability of four into motion again. Five is attracted to everything, loves change and excitement, is versatile and resourceful, clever and amusing. Five can also be bold and aggressive, erratic and rebellious.
Five is all about freedom! Anyone traveling down this path must expect frequent changes, travel and interest in the new and untried. Five wants to experience all sorts of people, places and things so it can use its ingenuity to profit by each and every experience. Five takes us deeper into the question of what it means to be human.
Five loves the sensual experiences that the five senses brings us. So, five can go overboard in exploring the sensual side of life and get high on it. Temptation is always around the corner for the number five!
The downside of five is that it represents a loss of something that the four needed for security. It might be a loss or disappointment in love, a lost argument, a loss of security, a loss of temper. But we have to remember that loss helps us meet obstacles and transform our lives.
Five is associated with fate -- fate as an agent of spirit and meaning.
So give yourself a high five and go for it! That’s the only way to live life to the fullest.
