So, OMG, talk about calling up my Spring Fool and being spontaneous! You'll never guess, so I'll tell you all about it. It just happened so fast that I haven't quite sorted it all out yet.
As you might imagine, I do have other interests beside the tarot, although in a twisted sort of way, it always seems to connect somehow. One of those interests is, not surprisingly, the paranormal. Not just the paranormal, but the new breed of enthusiasts and the next generation of paranormal research and investigation, which prides itself on scientific methods, experimentation with technology, and relying on a skeptical, cross-discipline approach to understanding or analyzing a thing from multiple angles. Right up my alley!
Well anyway, I'm poking around online a couple of weeks ago and trace some interesting stuff back to a tweet sent out by Jason Hawes, of SyFy Ghost Hunters
fame. I go check out the recommended www.itshaunted.com
paranormal community and get hooked right out of the gate! Just imagine -- a whole site full of "zesty questers" just like me!
I'll skip ahead from there and get right to the juicy part: The part where I won two tickets through my new home away from home to the TAPS live investigation event at Buffalo Central Terminal over the recent Memorial Weekend! (it was a fundraiser towards the restoration of the terminal -- more on that later) And here's where The Fool comes into play, on both sides, as it were. At first I was like, aw, that would be so great but I already have family plans. Really?
Really. Then the Spring Fool hit me upside the head, POW! And I'm like: "Hell ya brao, Road Trip"!
And before I knew it, we were "Shuffling off to Buffalo"!
Yep, yours truly got to go on a ghost hunt with Steve and Tango from TAPS! I tell you I was in my glory!
In fact, I was so overwhelmed initially by the sheer size and scope of the Terminal, as well as the decrepit, magnificence and wretched beauty of the place that I don't even remember what I said when I first met them, but you can be sure it was probably something very gushy or stupid! And I forgot to ask Tango about his tarot Magician card tattoo! Yep, totally blew it…
But they did both sign my own personal K-II and EMF detectors, as well as a TAPS t-shirt that I put on right then and there. Then I had the nerve to go back for seconds with a Buffalo Central shirt -- gotta do my part to support the restoration effort!
Both Steve and Tango were great! They're not only good at what they do, but they are genuine and generous with their attention, time, and patience. (The kind of guys you just naturally would want to hang out with and have a beer and a few laughs.)
So anyway, I'm also there with my 14 year old son, who is a serious skeptic and debunker of anything, paranormal or not. He's always looking for rational/natural explanations for things, and isn't very easily swayed by suggestion, but he does watch GH with me and so was totally up for the challenge of doing our very first investigation (outside of our own house, that is). He acted mainly as my camera man and "porter", lugging around like a gazillion pounds of stuff - extra batteries, recorder, meters, the camera I couldn't figure out how to work in the dark, etc. I wanted to put it all in the car but was afraid I might miss something or end up needing a gadget out of my bag of tricks. Good thing he's super strong.
We had some awesome experiences overall -- it's not every mom who gets to have some one-on-one time with her son AND simultaneously indulge her passion for the paranormal!
Well, there's lots more to tell; more people to introduce, experiences of note, and just sharing the sheer wonder of it all. And it has both an ironic and surreal ending, but I'll leave it here until next time…
If you're interested, I've got some pictures already posted of the event over at www.itshaunted.com
under my profile. (It's a free site, btw. A new kind of paranormal community that's connecting skeptics and believers alike. Check it out, you won't be sorry) I've also started a little paranormal group over there called "BOO". We're different too; more like an evolving collective of seekers, and we'd welcome anyone who wanted to come by and say "hi". Just look for the Fool
. That'll be me…
