Virgo sees what could be true. She apprehends the ideal with perfect clarity. But that clarity can be a double-edged sword. Virgo may use her powers to create a plan to manifest the ideal, or she may chastise herself into immobility for falling short of elusive perfection.
With the Full Moon in Virgo on Feb. 25, you Inner Critic may be making its voice heard. Everyone has an Inner Critic. It's the creation of what psychologists call a "negative cognitive bias." In short, we evolved to pay more attention to those things that threaten us than those to those things that make us happy. Being eaten by tiger is worse than missing a juicy treat, so we are watch out for dangers more than opportunities.
We develop the style of our own Inner critic over time from life experience and the messages we receive about what is safe and what is not. Unfortunately, that means our Inner Critic can collect a lot of ideas about threats that aren't relevant. The Inner Critic, whose job is to help us, ends up undermining our confidence and self-esteem.
If this sounds like you, it's time to give your Inner Critic a makeover.
You can't make your Inner Critic go away permanently (unless you are a psychopath). But you can give it a job to do, and ask it to do it well. If you retrain your inner critic to provide constructive commentary, it can become a potent ally, like an internal personal trainer.
How do you do this? Each time you hear your Inner Critic chiming in with something unconstructive – words like "I'm not good enough" or "I will fail" – you have the opportunity to reject the message. You may find saying "STOP" out loud is more effective than saying it silently to yourself. Each time you catch yourself repeating a negative message, repeat this process. (Stop. Eject. Incinerate. The Inner Critic is very thorough, so you may have multiple copies.)

As you begin to retrain your Inner Critic, it will be necessary to replace its messages with something positive. Nature abhors a vacuum; you can't change a habit unless you have something with which to replace it. So if your Critic's message is "I will fail," try something like "I will succeed" or "I will never give up."
You can also try visualizing your Inner Critic. First, imagine what your Inner Critic today might look like today. Is it merciless? Unfeeling? Angry? Now try imagining what your new critic – your Inner Coach – looks like. Imagine someone whose main job is to help you be happy, healthy and successful. Consider calling your coach by name – that's what friends do.
The only way to retrain the Inner Critic is through repetition. You can't wish away its presence overnight; will power alone is not sufficient. But over a few weeks, you can make a dramatic shift in your inner landscape. Go team you!
