As each planet orbits the Sun, it is “clothed” for a while in one of the zodiac signs. What is Jupiter wearing? All Leo, all the time!
That planet works to help us expand our fashion possibilities and explore new avenues. For the next year while it’s in Leo, we’ll be attracted to that which makes us feel unique and appreciated. It’s also about being creative and playful, and sometimes excessive and theatrical.
Here are five big Jupiter-in-Leo trends for fall/winter 2014:
Go for the Gold
This regal metal, traditionally associated with Leo, is big for fall 2014. On fall fashion runways Diane Von Furstenberg showed elegant gold lamé evening dresses, a retro classic, while others such as Valentino used sheer gilded fabrics. And pops of this gleaming metal add unexpected shine in casual tops, sweaters and jackets, too. Bonus: Gold accessories also play nicely against seasonal colors of teal, burgundy and gray.
Leos love to lounge. And the sensual touch of lingerie fabrics such as satin, brushed silk, lace or charmeuse can make anyone’s inner catwoman purr this season. Look for slip dresses a la Michael Kors, soft silk suits, or ruffle or feather accents. In outerwear, there are coats that could double as bathrobes, as seen in collections by Chloe, Balanciaga and Alberta Ferretti to name a few.

This classic is bigger than ever. What’s new and hot: printed fabrics that emulate leopard, the Lion’s close cousin. And to reflect Leo’s big-hearted, sun-ruled nature, they’re interpreted in warm shades from tawny caramel to bunt umber to hot orange. Look for this pattern in pony-hair flat shoes, or leopard-print sheath dresses and blouses. Or, how about a leopard-print faux-fur coat?
Live Even Larger
Clothing shapes have loosened up considerably of late. Thanks to Leo’s expansive and dramatic nature, this season they’re bigger than ever! Exaggerated silhouettes featured in the fall collections of Alexander McQueen, Celine and many others. A practical investment: a sweater with an extreme t-neck, as seen at Helmut Lang and Thakoon, that can easily double as a cowl to fend off any future polar vortexes.
Bold Bling Leo is the sign of royalty—and must crown a look with jewels! This season they’re used as embellishments on accessories from bags to shoes to jewelry. Like on the mignon evening bags embellished with over-sized faux gems, as seen at Tory Burch and Emilio Pucci. But many designers took huge Jupiterian flights of fancy—over-sized gemstone statement earrings at Celine, bedazzled cuffs, diamante mary janes a la Saint Laurent—the possibilities seem endless.
Jupiter in Leo seems to like to break the rules, as long as it’s done in a light-hearted, playful way. And by all means, dress for the applause!
