On the Powerpoint were 5 slides- all stating why systems are better than people.
"People have emotions,’ he said. ‘Systems don’t.’
Setting aside the point that people program systems, what he was talking about is having a “system” for everything. Automated where possible, manual where not. A fully systemised guide to what to say and do in every possible situation.
What he wanted was to take the personality out of the process - and nothing, and no one was going to convince him that this wasn’t a good idea.
‘People make mistakes when feelings get in the way.’
I can’t argue with that.
This guy is the type who’ll send through an email rather than talk to the person in the next cubicle. Any follow up is also done by email. He manages his team remotely- even though (most of the time) he’s under the same roof.
Mention problems at home or issues with the kids and you see his eyes glaze over and his mind wander. Yet, talk about issues that affect humanity as a whole or the environment or…and he’ll be there in the middle of the conversation. It isn’t that he doesn’t care about what’s happening with you- it’s just that there are bigger things, bigger concerns, bigger problems out there.
Yet, as a manager, his team love him- and with very good reason.
Aquarius is not like every other employee- he doesn’t usually aspire to be the Boss- his ambition lies elsewhere. He’s more interested in making things better, in revolutionising whatever needs improving, in fighting for whatever needs fighting for. If that means that he has a team he has to manage, well so be it... but he would prefer not to accept that responsibility if he doesn’t have to.
If you do happen to report to Aquarius Boss, you will find a manager like no other. Yes, he will expect hard work, but in return he will treat you fairly, objectively and you will be paid at reasonable market rates- this is not a boss who will blindly comply with the horrible artificiality of the bell curve (although he does understand the need for certain structures to be in place in order To Get Things Done).
He will not tolerate personality based decisions in the workplace, will prefer that messy emotional scenes are kept out of the office and will work tirelessly to promote equality and an environment which promotes and encourages freedom of thought, employee initiative and creative solutions to complex problems.
If you need to be provided with a clear set of tasks and direction, if you have no opinion of your own and if you like to bring your personal life to the office, it would be best if you arrange a transfer to another department as Aquarius Boss is probably not for you.
As with all things in life and astrology, there is a shadow side to every sign. In the case of Aquarius Boss he may be so used to flying alone that he has forgotten how to show or use human empathy.
The result may be the opposite to the above- an ineffective, detached and self absorbed manager who leaves his employees with no guidance, no support and unreasonable expectations every time he decides at the eleventh hour that he needs the assistance of someone else in order to meet a deadline. It is at this point that free thinking creative genius becomes frustrating and dangerous loose cannon.
Whichever one is your version of Aquarius Boss, watch, listen and learn- even in the worst scenario you will get a peek into the amazing mind and fixity of cause and purpose that is Aquarius.
