It’s that time of year when we look ahead, and there’s so much that is new and exciting for 2014 -- especially when it comes to your home. Here, we highlight four ways to give your décor a refresh that’s in tune with cosmic trends.
1. Uniquely Yours
The democratization of home décor is a wonderful thing in many ways. No longer are trendy items reserved for the privileged few. Thanks to mass retailers, almost anyone can get with a given trend without blowing a bundle. But Uranus is now in Aries, a sign that needs to be unique, to blaze a trend trail rather than following the beaten path. Increasingly homeowners want to surround themselves with items that no one else will have. Reproductions will be set aside for vintage finds from grandma’s attic or new pieces commissioned from a local cabinetmaker. Part of the trend: repurposing flea market finds, like turning a funky antique trunk into a coffee table or some other one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

2. Warm Metals
Across the board, trend forecasters predict that gold, bronze and copper will be the metals of choice for home accents. They were everywhere at the big home shows, from bronze-finish appliances to gilt living room accessories to copper backsplash tiles. Change was due, since the cool glint of brushed steel, silver and chrome has been around for many years. Not sure you can warm up to the look? Once the transiting south lunar node shifts to Aries (Fire) in March, you just might take a shine to it.
3. Drama and Glamour
Jupiter enters Leo (Fire) in July 2014. In home design, Jupiter symbolizes the things that make us feel optimistic, open and happy. Theatrical Leo feels out of place against a pale, minimalistic backdrop. It needs to make a splash and is not afraid of exaggeration, favoring lavish opulence. Rich and jewel-toned colors, unapologetically gilded and ornate mirror frames, and lushly layered textiles are just some of the ways in which leonine glamour will be infiltrating our homes, especially in the final six months of the year.
Color is giving prevailing neutral shades of grey and "greige" (grey plus beige, otherwise known as taupe) a run for their money. Mars, a planet that likes to liven things up, usually doesn’t have much to do with home décor other than giving the physical energy to finally strip off the old wallpaper. But exceptionally in 2014, the aggressive planet is in the sign of the decorator, Libra, until August. Pantone’s color of the year is Radiant Orchid, a compromise between purple and pink. How like the sign of the scales to not be able to make up its mind! Also, shades of blue are not only highly popular now, but very Libran -- especially trendy turquoise.
