On this date in 1912, Juliette Gordon Low gathered together eighteen young girls in Savannah, Georgia, and hence was born the Girl Scouts of the USA. Low was high on bringing these girls out of sometimes isolated home environments so that they could be given every opportunity to grow physically, mentally and spiritually. She believed in this girl empowering organization, and with good cause since today, over a century later, Girl Scout members number in the millions. I remember my Girl Scout years with fondness and love. I even remember how we began each meeting by reciting this promise: ‘On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, to help people at all times, and to live by the Girl Scout law.’ That law required each one of us to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring. On this day, why not reach out to someone who could use a little consideration and caring? Send an email, text or make a phone call that will surely lift someone’s spirits and brighten their day. Serve God and country in your own little way by being fair and friendly and, of course, helpful. Because it is in giving that we receive. Reach out. And then receive back. Let the laws of the Girl Scouts create even better karma kids for you!
