Is it a coincidence that both ‘Checkers Day’ and ‘Dog in Politics Day’ fall on this same date? The former is the name of a famous White House pooch while the latter seems fitting for a presidential election year. But instead of wagging the dog let’s look at ways that will have the dog wagging all on its own. If Fido has fleas then place two lemons cut into small bite-sized pieces in a quart of water. Leave the peel on. Boil this blend for an hour and then let it steep overnight. The next morning strain the liquid and then use some of it to sponge down or spray your dog. Fleas are repelled by the smell of citrus oil. As a bonus, the lemon water will also help heal any existing fleabites. Adding a bit of brewer’s yeast that’s high in vitamin B1 (thiamine) into your dog’s diet will produce a repellent odor that you can’t smell but sickens fleas. Standard dosage is one tablespoon for every fifty pounds of dog. Staying away from collars and sprays that contain strong synthetic ingredients will allow your pet to ward off heart trouble, allergies and even nervous system disorders. If that doesn’t have Fido wagging his tail, I don’t know what will.
