Julia Roberts’ half sister Nancy Motes, a long term drug addict, committed suicide a few days ago amidst recriminations of rejection by her sister and mother.
It was a messy family situation from square one with Julia’s actor/playwright parents splitting when she was 4 years old and her mother marrying an unemployed abusive husband, disliked by Julia who was father of Nancy. That second marriage ended when Julia was 16, her biological father having died when she was 10. So she did not exactly have a stable childhood.
Julia Roberts, 28 Oct 1967 12.16 am Atlanta Georgia has a private, emotionally intense 4th house Scorpio Sun Mercury Neptune (not conjunct); with a romantically complicated Venus Pluto Uranus conjunct in Virgo; and a hard edged Saturn in Aries square Mars in Capricorn. Plus a flamboyant Leo Moon square Neptune.

Nancy Motes, 19 May 1976, was a Sun Venus Jupiter in indulgent Taurus with a difficult, unhappy Saturn in late Cancer conjunct Mars in Leo square Uranus in Scorpio. That latter sat very uncomfortably with Julia’s Scorpio Sun. And Nancy’s Pluto opposed Julia’s Saturn and squared her Mars. So bad chemistry as is often the case in dysfunctional families.
Their relationship chart had a composite Mars Uranus square Venus – so volatile, inclined to explode. Plus a deeply suspicious composite Saturn opposition Neptune.
Addicts often blame the world and those close for their problems. And certainly it must have been tough having a slim, stratospherically successful elder half-sister. But such is fate.
Julia has a fairly steely backbone with a Scorpio Sun, has-to-be self-reliant Saturn in Aries especially square Mars and a capable-of-standing-alone North Node in Aries. She didn’t have it easy herself and may well have assumed everyone else had her self discipline. Though she does seem to have paid for a fair number of rehab attempts for her half sister.
