Latching On - Using Meditation to Calm Obsessive Thoughts

The mind can have a habit pattern of latching on to positive or negative thoughts and ideas. These thoughts can be triggered by tragic or fear-based reports in the media, friends' comments, situations that remind us of past challenges or past happy memories -- we can lose our basic centering and sense of balanced well-being in an instant. Thoughts then create a flood of emotions as it is difficult to discern whether the thoughts are our actual reality or not, and then the mind goes into overdrive trying to analyze and solve apparent problems that may not ever materialize. Intuition and connection with our divine energies dissolve or become fuzzy.

The planet Pluto is often involved in energies of obsession and compulsion. Today it is in a harmonious flowing angle with Mercury, the planet of the mind and communication. So our tendency to latch on might be a bit stronger right now -- and this might also be a good day to stabilize the pattern to an energy of empowered thought and communication infused with integrity. Mercury is still retracing the ground it covered in the recent retrograde review cycle, linking our thoughts to issues of security and comfort.

To begin, you might want to use deep focused breath to calm the mind, perhaps in alignment with stretching or yoga postures or even vigorous exercise to really slow the mind down.

Then take one situation you find your mind analyzing or obsessing about. Take two minutes to allow your mind to show you your ideal solution to this issue, perhaps so ideal you would consider it a total fantasy. Allow the solution to be in picture form if you visualize easily, or write a stream of consciousness paragraph about it. Then allow the mind to show you its worst case scenario. Follow the train of thought or pictures to their logical conclusion, asking the question 'then what happens?' and 'what happens next?' until the mind plays out the disaster scenario to the point you probably realize the ridiculous nature of the mind process.

Now call in your High Self and spirit guides to surround you with Light, power and healing, allowing yourself to feel the level of help you have to create a good, balanced outcome, if only you'll let go of the mental chatter and negative thought creation. Hold this vision of ease and flow for as long as you can. Write a paragraph or distill the balanced outcome to an easily repeated sentence.

The process of grounding and quieting mental process allows us to feel balanced, healthy and flowing in our intuition, each moment leading with a breath into the next.

PS: People often think I have my own life together and I make it look easy, often in a good and loving mood. I know my intuition and psychic skills are strong and reliable, and yet today, I am writing about the mental latching on issue because it took me all day to get my mind corraled and find my center again. No matter how clear and balanced we are, there can be those moments when our day to day system fails us, our humanness revels in its power and we need to reach deeply into our back spiritual pockets of meditation, inner process and inspiration to get back on the path again.
