You clicked onto this blog today to read about Aries in the workplace. This is probably because you are an Aries, in which case you want me to just cut to the important bits and tell the world (well, at least the small proportion that are reading this blog) how you are a born leader, charismatic, energetic, creative thinking and pioneering. You will want me to say that you are generally optimistic, believe the best and are inspired by challenge.
Being Aries, you probably want me to skim through the stuff that you aren’t so great at (like being told what to do, bosses who insist on punctuality and impotence...in decision making, that is) and make this short, sharp and to the point.
If you aren’t an Aries, you may be after a more balanced viewpoint, a mix of the good, bad and plain old ugly. Perhaps you work with a Ram who drives you mad with his energy as he whirls from problem to plan. You may be a boss who wonders why your Aries employee can turn up late day after day and still (frustratingly) meet his targets. You might wonder why the employee who pushed himself to the limit to master his job, now appears bored and is looking for something new.
Perhaps you are a Project Manager who is constantly frustrated by the fact that your Aries colleague seems to read the 1st sentence of your emails and has never done more than glance at the attendee section of the minutes. Yet somehow he always completes the deliverables he has been set.
Maybe you are a business analyst who has to fill in the gaps to the solution that the Aries salesman sketched onto the back of a beer coaster in the airport lounge. The solution shouldn’t work, but does.
You may want me to point out that Aries can be selfish, arrogant, has to always be first, and is too much of a risk taker. You might even want to hear me make comments around Aries not being great at politics and being so wound up in the game that he fails to recognise the backstabber in the next partition. I could even say that the Aries employee hates repetition, is impatient, has a short fuse (which can and does get him into trouble) and can self sabotage if bored.
There is no doubt at all that your Aries colleague (or employee) will actively seek battles, take decisive action where others are happy to sit in a meeting room and debate policy. He may push the envelope when it comes to diversity and harassment policies (but you do have to admit that what they did was funny... no? No, I didn’t approve either...) and cause widespread exasperation. Yet somehow, some way, he makes the impossible possible.
So, there you have it... Aries in the workplace.
