On December 7, Mars moves into the airy-fairy sign of Libra for quite an extended stint. Between now and next July, we are all being called to work on our relationships and the ever-elusive balance between self and the other.
Mars shows where we feel called to action, aggression and discipline. Libra is the sign of balance, partnerships and the good old I'm-okay-if you're-okay dilemma. The energy of Mars has a challenging time in the sign of Libra as it runs counter to the natural tendencies of the planet (in astrospeak we call this Mars in his debilitation).
The downside to Mars in Libra is the way our energy gets wishy-washy and indecisive. Passive-aggressive tendencies are more pronounced over the next few months as we struggle to assert our needs in a direct manner. Libra abhors the ugliness of confrontation and disharmony, thus there's a tendency to sugarcoat or avoid speaking up for what we really want in our relationships. Often the avoidance and roundabout way of asserting our needs when Mars is in Libra is due to the fear that it will cause a disconnect with the other.
Mars likes to go for it in a brave, independent, warrior-style manner without too much thinking. Libra is famous for hemming and hawing as Lady Justice attempts to keep those Scales balanced. You can imagine the challenge of Mars feeling his initial impulse to forge ahead totally thwarted if he has to constantly stop and consider how his actions will look in the eyes of the other.
Imagine a soldier on a battlefield having to stop and worry if he's going to be less likable or upset anyone if he goes into combat. Mars is the god of war, after all, and prefers to operate under the energy that speaks more to survival-of-the-fittest or every-man-for-himself than having to ask permission or try to cloak his competitive or aggressive instincts.
Since Libra is the opposite or shadow sign to Aries, you’ll often find a hidden competitive energy operating beneath the surface niceties. The Mars in Libra agenda is to preserve the balance between the give-and-take in relationships. There is often a hyper-awareness to keeping the scorecard equal during this transit -- so takers beware!
This is an excellent time to put energy into finding more balance in our relationships over the next several months as we are more willing to compromise and consider the needs of the partner. Teaming up with a sidekick feels especially energizing under this transit, so if you're feeling stuck, don't go it alone. Pairing up can be just the fire you need to get things moving again between now and July.
