“Retrograde planets are like a vision quest to the original teachings of that planet.”
-- Caroline Casey
The above quote is especially true of the planet that rules vision quests, dreams and our imagination: Neptune, which also rules illusion and delusion. These themes come rushing to the shore -- especially since Neptune is in his home turf of Pisces, now through November 11.
All of the usual Neptune themes are doubled during this time. The good news with Neptune retrograde is that it heightens our sensitivity to picking up on things that might otherwise delude us. In other words, we have fewer blind spots. The retrograde phase of Neptune actually makes it easier for us to wake up to where we have been living in a fantasy world of our own internal projections, for better or worse.
We need a certain healthy amount of the mythic in our lives but if we over-identify ourselves (or others) as gods, heroes, victims or saviors in the process, we are bound to crash back to the reality of human shortcomings in a painful way. Neptune retrogrades bring all of this to our attention if we are willing to step back and watch the movie we have been projecting.
Neptune also has to do with attunement. Our psychic sensitivity is especially strong during Neptune retrogrades and we are being asked to tune in. If we don’t make time to hear our inner voice, we could suffer from confusion, fogginess and a feeling that we are drifting with no destination. Spiritual practices like meditation, dream work and retreats are favored during this phase so that we can get clear with the profound guidance of our own inner voice.
When there is not enough time devoted to soul time, Neptune retrogrades can exaggerate this need by making us feel completely spaced out and disillusioned with life in general. Try not to fall prey to the victim/savior complex during this period as mentioned above. What is needed is more devotion to the rituals and creations of the soul. We are being reminded to honor our need for glamour, mysticism and dream/soul time in our lives so that we don’t opt out for unhealthy means of escape.
Neptune is the part of us that would rather be somewhere over the rainbow even while on Earth. But without Neptune, like would have zero glamour. Imagine that feeling at the end of the night when they turn the lights on after a concert to kick everyone out: that is like Neptune going retrograde -- at first. We might not like what we see without the dim lighting and the entrancing music -- but alas, reality bites.
