New Moon Resolutions

In my local grocery store, Thanksgiving decorations appeared on the shelves this week. I haven't even wrapped my head around pumpkins, and they're talking turkey.

We all know what happens next. Before the Sun sets on November 1, the ghosts and witches will have vanished, replaced by evergreens and sparklies. Then weeks of mad holiday rush, and finally: Ta Da! 2014.

So we start the year exhausted, clutching our list of resolutions. We're determined the new year will be different. But the weeks roll by and there's always a reason for not doing something. Soon even the resolutions are forgotten. In the blink of an eye, there are pumpkins on the shelves again.

Sound familiar?

If it does, may I make a suggestion? Our modern techno-enhanced lifestyle creates the illusion that time is moving faster. So much happens in a day, an hour, that a once-a-year resolution check in is not enough if you actually want to change the course for your own life.

Fortunately, nature has already built an alternative to a new year: A new Moon. And we're gifted with a new one once a month. Even better, brain scientists tell us that creating any new habit takes about three to four weeks to establish the neural pathways to make it stick. In other words, one Moon cycle.

Why don't you try it for yourself? Rather than saving up all your resolutions, try making one change with this new Moon. It doesn’t matter how big or small it is, only that you want to do it (not that someone else wants you to, that rarely turns out well).

Nurture your change seed. Obsess over it, if it feels good. Each night, imagine it taking root with the growing light of the Moon. Celebrate it at the full Moon. Allow anything that hinders your cherished creation fall away as the Moon decreases in light again.

Congratulations! You have a new habit of your own choosing. And with another new Moon just around the corner, you have the chance to lather, rinse, repeat.

Don't dismiss the baby steps. Over time, they can remake your life.
