While this may not seem like a very artistic topic, it would be unwise to not consider the impact our progenitors have on our creativity! At the time of this blogging, Mercury is retrograde in none other than the sign of the Mother, Cancer, until July 1. Ergo: this is an especially good time to check-in with this primary relationship. (Let’s just forget for a moment that it’s Fathers we should be celebrating with June 14 on our heels!)
Love ‘em or loathe ‘em -- and at times both -- moms aren’t going anywhere. Our creativity may be in response to their encouragement to follow our dreams or as a response to unconscious discouragement in being self-expressed. It is an immense topic with a lot of grey areas, but one way we can glean insight about our experience of the Mother is through the Moon: its sign, placement and relationship to other planets in the chart.
Have you ever wondered how siblings who were raised by the same mother can have such a different experience of her? While Mum certainly exhibits some of the same qualities across the board, our Moon sign can color our feelings of her and the feelings we receive from her. Because our Moon sign also represents the sort of care we need to feel whole, nurtured and emotionally safe, each of us will pass or fail (and everything in between) her, depending on how our specific needs were met. Whether we mythologized her or barely got to know her, as we grow up we can start to take some responsibility for the way we experienced her and hopefully reach a deeper level of understanding and appreciation.
Sometimes we don’t realize how much of the past we carry around and how that affects us. Without even realizing it, we have often limited ourselves -- our relationships, our creativity -- by adhering to decisions we made about ourselves when we were very little, in response to how we were raised. We have forgotten that the way we remember our past is merely OUR interpretation. It is one among thousands that could have been settled upon depending on the individual who experienced it (and the Moon who experienced it!) and we take the liberty of confusing interpretation with outright truth. See if you can separate “events” from the “meaning” you make of those events so you can create by choice and through joy -- not because you're driven by any ghosts from your past to prove yourself, “get” love or whatever personal variation can get mixed into the creative blender.
Below you’ll find some of the ways you may have experienced your mother (and get a sense of your own needs/resources/blindspots) depending on your Moon sign. Again, you’ll want to look to the House and Aspects to other planets to get a full grasp of your heart’s blank slate. It was through this zero point that we interpreted our experiences. Once we become more aware that we just need certain things to feel okay, we can express more consciously and invite the sorts of emotional experiences that nurture us in the present moment.
