Super Moons and Black Moons -- Explained!

Do you keep hearing that we're about to experience a Super Moon on January 30? And how about the ubiquitous posts about the Black Moon that have gone viral lately? Secretly you have no clue what they mean -- you just sense that its big news. (Don't feel bad -- your friends probably dont know either.)

Let's break it down, starting with the mysterious, yet seemingly ever-present Super Moon. One thing about the term Super Moon is that it was created by an astrologer -- but its now in wide use by astronomers. Score one for astrology!

Richard Nolle came up with the term "Super Moon" 30 years ago, but its really taken off in the last few years. It basically describes a new or full Moon that happens at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in its orbit. This is also called a syzgy in astronomy. Even simpler: this is when the Moon looks HUGE. You can only see it when the Moon is full, however, not during the new Moon because its dark and nearly invisible. There are four to six Super Moons per year. In 2014, we will have five in total.

Super Moons are thought to bring powerful tidal forces, possible flooding, strong storms, volcanic eruption, and seismic activity. From an astrological perspective, these forces affect not just the earth, but also our bodies and minds making us emotional, agitated, and disposed to a bit of hysteria on or near Super Moons. We too are prone to eruption. Normal new and full Moons are intense, but Super Moons are really, REALLY intense. Demythologizing the Black Moon, Wiccans believe that any time we have two new Moons in one calendar month, we are experiencing what they call the Black Moon. This is analogous to the Blue Moon that gave us the phrase once in a blue Moon (referring to two full Moons in one month).

However, this really has nothing to do with astrology. Its really taken off because in 2014, there are two new Moons in January, so there is a veritable Black Moon sensation. If you're interested in making magic, Wiccans believe that spells on Black Moons are especially powerful. Watch for the first Black Moon of 2014 arriving on January 30, which also happens to be the Chinese New Year: The Year of the Horse.

Adding to the confusion is the fact that astrologers use a point called Black Moon Lilith, which is a midpoint in ones natal chart. Its the apogee of the Moons orbit the point where its furthest from the Earth. This deep, complex part of your chart describes your relationship to creativity, sexuality, magic, potency and the occult. Its understandably confusing because the Wiccan Black Moon, the time of supposed powerful magic-making, has similar qualities to this chart point.
