Think pink! The catch phrase, usually attributed to legendary 1960s Vogue editor Diana Vreeland, resurfaces in fashion circles with great regularity.
Love it or hate it, the hue is hard to escape now. Along with other pastel shades, pink is a big trend for fall 2013. It can be found in the latest fashion collections from the likes of Oscar de la Renta to Prada to TopShop.
And we all know how quickly trends go from the runways to home collections. Shades of pink, from romantically pale to shocking and vibrant, are found in a wide array of accessories and made almost every major paint company’s hot list for 2013.
But powder or ballet pink like Glidden’s Fresh Pink Lemonade (GLR17) for walls? Why even consider Minuet Rose (T14-15) from Behr’s 2014 collection? And why now?
Color trends go through cycles, and astrology is the study of cycles, as reflected in astronomical points. Perhaps astrology provides a hint as to why this of all the colors in the spectrum should resonate in the collective consciousness.

Color therapists tell us pink is the shade of love and tenderness. It promotes self-nurturing and acceptance, and unconditional compassion. Metaphysicians deem it to symbolize love in its purest, most essential form. Which may make it the perfect antidote to the tense and transformational square aspect between the planets Uranus (in Aries) and Pluto (in Capricorn) that have dominated in 2013. The last occurred on November 1, part of a series of these square aspects that will conclude in early 2015.
They create an atmosphere that’s highly charged as our need for individual freedom and expression comes into conflict with the heavy hand of authority or a harsh reality that thwarts our progress.
And, Jupiter in Cancer also joins this Aries-Capricorn dynamic at times, creating a preponderance of cardinal signs. Pink is the perfect way to evoke the sign that wasn’t invited to the party: Libra.
Whatever the impetus, pink is Venus and pure love, “… pure and sweet as a new baby,” wrote Sylvia Plath. Harmony, simplicity. Love that exists for its own sweet sake alone. Pink opens the heart, and can put sweetness and light back into your life.
In this light, go ahead and think pink. Go further and wear it, take a bubble bath in it, deck the halls with it through the New Year. Looking at the world through rose-colored glasses, considering the pressure to see only the darker, self-interested, cynical side, becomes an act of ultimate courage and vision.
