Un Poquito Fuego: New Moon conjunct Mars

As a New Moon breaks in Pisces on Friday, we find ourselves enriched by our emotions and eager to express our creative impulses. Usually the energy of Pisces invokes our gentler nature, exposing both our compassion and goofy sensibilities. However because this particular New Moon is conjoined by the red planet – Mars – this will not be one of those times you’ll want to sleep through. If you try, you may find yourself with a bad case of insomnia. Mars straps on a saddle and puts spurs into the days surrounding March 5th, letting us know that it’s all right to dream but we best do something about it!

Just as the Farmer’s Almanac advises when to plant crops according to the lunar cycle for the best results, astrologists have similarly found there is an auspicious time to “plant” intentions. This is during the New Moon period, which is roughly the 2 - 3 day period surrounding the monthy New Moon (in this case is March 5th – 7th). You may discover that intentions that you make during this time have that extra pull of nature, simulating the “growth” or waxing period of this great gravitational luminary from darkness to full light. Our intentions similarly grow, making themselves increasingly manifest in our lives, culminating at the Full Moon two weeks later (in this case near March 18th). Of course the more conscious we are about our intentions and more diligent we are about believing them and taking action towards them, the more likely they are to take root and deliver consequences in our life.

While there are guidelines for setting intentions such as being very specific and breaking goals into small achievable steps with a timeline in mind, this Pisces New Moon conjunct Mars gives us further clues for how to go about getting what we want. The Moon is Pisces wants us to engage our intuition and feel our way towards our personal goals. Pisces wisdom tells us to open our hearts and focus on receiving, rather than pushing our way towards our own selfish ends. Pisces is about compassion remember; we have its energetic flow behind us when we balance what we want with what is good for the greater whole. Making intentions that are heart-centered during the pious Pisces New Moon will have all the more magic and “luck” when you plant them.

Mars adds additional clues and asks that we use un poquito fuego (a little fire). I say that because I rode a horse with that name, and while she was sweet most of the time, the thing near bucked me off at one point during what I expected to be a lazy ride. I should have known better! If we are aware that Mars is in the picture and can meet its energy halfway, we can ride that fiery spirit and take advantage of its impulsive nature rather than feel victimized by it. In this case, you know what you’re dealing with in this New Moon Period. Consider yourself forewarned. Mars wants you to add a little sizzle to those sappy heart-centered intentions. If you have an intention to lollygag by lake with a lover near the manifestation time of the Full Moon of the 18th, Mars asks that you dive into the intention squarely and actually buy the ticket or reserve the campsite. I’m speaking in hyperbole, but you get the idea. Mars demands courage and gets what it wants when it takes action, often in the face of fears and insecurities. Pisces gets what it wants when it is open, receptive and honors intuition as well as what unifies us spiritually. Setting intentions as well as going after them with both these two energies in mind, will help make your Full Moon period all the brighter. Enjoy and don’t forget to go after (whole-heartedly) what you want. Yee haw!
