The word “chakra” in Sanskrit means, “wheel”. In Vedic alchemy, the chakras are the deeper energy centers in our “astral body” -- our mental body. It is this mental body that travels with us from lifetime to lifetime. The astrology chart itself is a picture of the chakras at any given time. This concept works on many levels.
For instance, at this very minute, the planets are in the sky somewhere. For whichever astrology sign they occupy, they will bring forth certain qualities in each planet. Based on this, you will be predisposed to act in a certain way. The current planet placements -- and how they relate to where the planets were when you were born -- make it so that you will be affected differently than anyone else.
In Vedic teaching, the physical universe is called the “Kala Purusha”, “the Being of Time” or “Divine Mother”. The sections of sky above your head actually refer to different parts of the Kala Purusha. As the planets move through the sky, different chakras are activated, creating a certain mood in the Divine Mother. It’s important that you do your best to act in harmony with this Divine mood. Your moods are always beneficial -- but not always easy!
In general, Vedic astrology seeks to harmonize the outer chakras in the sky with the inner chakras of people. So, how do the chakras work?
There are seven charkas that activate our karma. The highest chakra does not have an astrological correlation as it is beyond our karma. The third-eye chakra is ruled by the Sun and Moon. It refers to the archetype of masculine and feminine energy. The other five chakras are ruled by a single planet operating through its masculine and feminine nature.
The Ajna Chakra (Third Eye) - Ruled by the Sun and Moon – Leo and Cancer
The Visuddha Chakra (Throat) - Ruled by Mercury - Gemini and Virgo
The Anahata Chakra (Heart) - Ruled by Venus - Libra and Taurus
The Manipura Chakra (Navel) - Ruled by Mars - Scorpio and Aries
The Swadisthana Chakra (Reproductive) - Ruled by Jupiter - Pisces and Sagittarius
The Muladhara Chakra (Root) - Ruled by Saturn - Capricorn and Aquarius
Each planet rules the chakra at the point in the body most appropriate for its nature. Then, the planet expresses that nature through a masculine and feminine quality (except the Sun and Moon, which together rule the Third-Eye Chakra).
For instance, Mercury rules the throat chakra. This is related to speech, just like Mercury. The astrology signs are Gemini and Virgo, two signs related to communication and organizing details. Gemini activates Mercury, being masculine. Virgo reflects upon Mercury, being feminine.
We also see Venus rules the heart (love), Mars rules the navel (courage), Jupiter rules reproduction (growth), Saturn rules the root (survival). Focusing energetically with chakras is the work of yoga. Vedic astrology is a great help in this process.
