Recently the last of my dogs suddenly passed away. That made three dogs crossing over in 10 months. We had all three dogs for 10 – 13 years. My husband and I had not been vacationing for a long time since all of our cats and dogs had special needs. We could only be away for a half day at most. So with Brinkley crossing over, my husband decided that we needed to get away. We went to Orlando to the Disney parks for 4 days. I didn’t realize how much I needed to get away until I did.

As nice as it was going to be to get away, I was thinking we were going to a place that is filled with people, lines and lines of people. I forced myself to just think “Relax.” It was an effort as I was anything but relaxed when I got there. I could hear the Angels say, “Deep breaths.” What I was amazed at was how many people were in the “It’s all about me and my family” mode and not in a good way! They were bumping into people, pushing in line, using cell phones and talking loudly when a show as going on, etc. Even so, I just breathed and relaxed not rushing to anything. The more I didn’t rush, the more I was aware of the rushing around me. It was like I was going in slow motion and others were speeding up. Does rushing and vacation even fit in the same experience? The people who rush and push to get as much done in as little time as possible have to take a vacation at home after their vacation away before they can even go back to work because they are so tired.

One poignant moment happened when I was in a crowded Disney store admiring Christmas decorations. My purse hit a young child. I bent down and apologized to her. She gave me a confused look and ran away from me. About five minutes later a woman approached me with the little girl in tow and I thought I was fixing to get yelled at for bumping into her. But instead the lady said, “Thank you.” She explained that her family had been to Disney for a week and that not one person had said, “Excuse me” or “Sorry” or anything for all the bumps, pushes and rudeness. She said her daughter was so surprised that I apologized that she ran to tell her Mom. She said, “Thank you for showing my daughter that it is better to be kind than what she has seen this week.” Wow!

Do we really need to do all the things we schedule on vacation? Wasn’t the idea of vacation to relax from your normal schedule in a different place? If we weren’t rushing to do so much, wouldn’t we enjoy the experience more? During the upcoming vacation season, let’s remember to take our time, have fun, relax and most of all be kind to others. You never know who is watching.

Many Blessings of Peace,

Christina
