In the past few years, there has been increased attention paid to the topic of same-sex marriage. This is not surprising given that from 2009 to just recently, structure-building Saturn was traveling through relationship-oriented Libra. As such, we’ve been collectively seeking to define and redefine what constitutes equality and what the institution of marriage means.
Election day is pumping up the volume of this topic in our national conversation. Three states -- Maine, Maryland and Washington -- have referendums on the ballot that would legalize same-sex marriage, while Minnesota has one that would ban it.
What’s interesting is not that there would be a state that would recognize it, as there are already six (plus the District of Columbia). What would be pioneering --and a potential reflection of the revolutionary Uranus-Pluto square that is casting a large influence these days -- would be its sanctioning by a popular vote; the laws in the other states came into being either through the legislature or court.
Supporters of same-sex marriage are guardedly optimistic. A cited factor for an observed sea change in public opinion is not only that major organizations (such as the N.A.A.C.P.) have come out in support, but for the first time the President has as well.
What’s astrologically intriguing is that on the day that President Obama publically noted his support (May 9), the destiny-oriented North Node was in a very similar spot to where share-your-ideas Mercury will be on Election Day.
Speaking of Mercury, it goes retrograde on November 6, and with that there may be a rash of disputed electoral outcomes. While uncertainty may abound, one thing we can be certain of is that no matter the results, the focus upon this topic will not abate anytime soon. After all, Saturn will be in fight-for-what-you-believe-in Scorpio for the next two-plus years.
