Did you know there is a legend surrounding Midsummer's Eve that actually doesn't have anything to do with Shakespeare's (or Puck's, or Titania's) dreams? Indeed, this particular legend is all about magical, powerful herbs that are said to be at the zenith of their manifesting might on June 20!
It has been said that cutting St. John's wort -- also known as Tipton's weed, chase-devil or Klamath weed -- on Midsummer's Eve and hanging it in your home will guard against the effects of both negativity and lightning. Considering all the wacky recent weather patterns across the globe, we can all surely appreciate the abilities of this one very special herb!
As well, if you have any small boulders on your property, place a beautiful bouquet of fresh-cut flowers on the largest boulder you can find as an offering to Mother Nature.
Have a happy and safe summer, indeed!
All you recent college grads now set to go looking for your first big job in the so-called real world -- this one's for you! (It's also for anyone else out there in search of payment for their passion.)
I'll start by offering a reminder that it only takes two seconds for someone in a hiring position to form a first impression of you. And of course, while we all know that first impressions ideally shouldn't be based on looks alone, well, unfortunately that's not our reality. Any advantage you can bring to the employment party, all the better.
And so, enter Feng Shui! Here are a few sartorial tips that will allow you to get a leg up on the competition -- and also get that all-important proverbial foot in the door!
First things first: Organize your entire closet! Remove any clothing that needs addressing or mending, as well as items that no longer fit or appeal to you. Give them all away and create positive karma for everyone.
Go through all the clothes you plan to keep and do an inventory. Doing so will help you take note of what you need to create five good interview outfits. Do you have more tops than bottoms? More ties than belts, or shoes than skirts? You get the idea.
While you're in inventory mode, determine which accessories you'll need to top off those five interview outfits. Just keep in mind that less is more when interviewing -- after all, you don't want your potential employer distracted by your chandelier-like dangling earrings or giant swag watch.
Finally, you can easily rejuvenate your wardrobe with a few key pieces that will work interchangeably with clothes you already have.
Now, since we're in the month of June and entering another summer, Feng Shui suggests that the element that will garner you the most recognition is Fire! So, don't be shy about wearing reds (which will always get you remembered), oranges and hot pinks, as well as watermelon, corals or geraniums. Hot pink and orange are both trending this summer season, as is color blocking, so get creative without going overboard (at least not until your first paycheck).
Good luck graduate -- the world is your oyster. Now go share these pearls of Feng Shui fashion wisdom!
It's summertime again, and the living is easy -- unless, of course, you have a bug in your ear!
Yes, that's right, a bug in your ear. And although it doesn't happen too often, I hear this is a fairly normal occurrence for baseball players. And so, this one's for all the first basemen, left-fielders, managers and anyone else who goes out to the old ballgame and comes home with more than a stomach ache from eating too many $10 hot dogs!
Now, if an insect somehow finds its way into your ear, turn your head -- and your ear! -- towards the Sun. Why? Because bugs are attracted to light. If the mishap occurs at night, shut off all nearby lights and shine a flashlight into your ear.
If either of those methods don't work, you might need to flush the bugger out. The best way to do so is to pour a teaspoon of warmed olive or garlic oil into your ear, then hold it in there for at least one minute. At that point, tilt your head so the excess oil and the extra bug both emerge. You can also use warm water for the same solution, but since the aforementioned oils also heal minor ear ailments, you may want to opt for the former.
Now you can go ahead with your peanuts and Cracker Jack and root, root, root for the home team, because nothing else will bug you from enjoying all nine innings!
What better month than June to celebrate one of summer's most magically delicious fruits -- the strawberry!
In ancient legends, the strawberry was almost always associated with attracting true, lasting love. In fact, wild strawberries have even been dubbed the "heart root" by the Chippewa, who also consider this fruit a symbol of both perfection and foresight. This symbolism likely stems from the fact that the strawberry falls under the auspices of Venus, astrology's own planet of love. Or, it could simply be that the Roman custom of planting strawberries to manifest a mate has stood the test of time.
Either way, the whole chocolate-dipped-strawberries-and-champagne thing has been known to induce other delights besides culinary ones. So why not go all the way and make a seasonal strawberry shortcake? After all, whipped cream can serve multiple purposes in the bedroom!
SEXY STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE
1/3 cup of corn oil
2/3 cup of whole milk
1 cup of all-purpose flour
1 cup of whole wheat pastry flour
1 tablespoon of sugar
2 teaspoons of double-acting baking powder
Crushed, finely minced fresh mint leaves, to taste
2 quarts of whole fresh strawberries
One cup of whipped cream for garnish
1. Combine corn oil and whole milk in a measuring cup. Chill in the freezer for 30 minutes.
2. In a medium bowl, combine all dry ingredients. Remove oil-milk mixture from the freezer and stir hard. Then, immediately stir it into flour mixture until all ingredients are moist and can form a ball. Divide evenly into a dozen muffin tins pre-greased with vegetable spray.
3. Bake at 450 degrees for 10 minutes and/or until lightly browned.
4. Split the shortcakes in half, then layer with slightly sugared strawberries and cream. Garnish with more strawberries, as well as cream and mint. Serve and enjoy.
Ooh la la!
Each month, I receive many e-mails asking about specific items I tote along on my travels to ensure an easy, prosperous, productive and fulfilling trip. It's true -- I never leave home without my magical travel adventure kit!
Firstly, I carry a special blend of essential oils that I make myself. It includes neroli, orange, juniper and bay non-synthetic -- all 100% true oils. I spray this blend around any space where I stay.
I also carry in my kit: a small statue of laughing Buddha; a Feng Shui crystal; some frankincense, or perhaps sandalwood or violet incense sticks; and, a few Feng Shui coins. I place the Feng Shui crystal on a bedside table -- or better yet, I hang it on nine inches of red thread over the back of the bed. As for laughing Buddha, I place him kitty-corner to the door of the room, facing outward to invite good energy inside!
I burn the incense as needed, and I place the Feng Shui coins in a small container I set in the wealth area of the room. I always leave the coins behind when I depart, in hopes of leaving good fortune for whomever finds them next. (Of course, I leave actual money next to the bed for the maids, too!)
So there you go -- my magical travel adventure kit for my pleasure excursions!
It's been said that if a June night could talk, it would probably boast that it invented romance. So, it should come as no surprise that the flower most associated with this month, according to Feng Shui, is the wistful wisteria!
Ruled by the planet of all things communication-related, Mercury, wisteria represents gentleness, inspiration, knowledge, intuition and, yes, love. And a bit of investigation into the mystical properties of wisteria reveals why it may affect romance in ways that go far beyond simply holding hands.
This beautiful climbing plant, with its deliciously spice-scented flowers, is said to be helpful for women or men experiencing problems with their sexuality -- or who fear intimacy. The act of smelling or wearing an essential oil blended from wisteria could conceivably cure the aforementioned anomalies and bring balance back to the bedroom!
Indeed, a truly "scentual" experience that's perfect for a month made for romance!
