Your Feng Shui Advice for September 2010

This is the month that heralds the Autumn Equinox, inspiring feelings of thanksgiving and joy as these days of the second harvest begin. Light and dark hold equal sway on this day. This equinox actually celebrates the Sun child, who symbolizes the essence of the male aspect inherent in each and every one of us. Many traditions believe that we should embrace this side of ourselves at this sacred time of year in order to renew fertility in all our endeavors -- especially as we approach seasons in this hemisphere that grow darker and demand meditation and introspection. As the days become longer, this equinox offers an opportunity to explore all facets of ourselves so we can acknowledge and honor them!

During this introspective period, however, we may find that there are aspects of ourselves that are outworn, outdated and that no longer serve us. Likewise, we may find other situations, circumstances or even ingrained thoughts that will need to be released from our psyche before we can grow ever closer to our source, and live the life of our dreams.

One way to affect such a release is pretty easy to perform and requires only two black candles, an 18-inch piece of thin black ribbon, some scissors, a pair of index cards and your own resolve to release all negativity from your life at this special moment in time. On one of the index cards write any circumstances, situations, people, places and/or things that you are ready to release. Then, on the other card, simply write your name. Put both candles in holders and place the card with your signature under one while then putting the card with the negative influences to be banished under the other. Connect the candles by tying the base of the holders together with the black ribbon. Initially, separate the candles so that the ribbon is taut.

Light the candles and allow them to burn for 5 to 10 minutes, all the while envisioning releasing whatever you wrote from your life. See it going away in a big cloud of smoke. Once you feel that your visualization is powerful and that you are actually releasing negativity from your life, cut the ribbon and declare that “Now, it is done and I am released!” During the rest of the time that the candles burn, in intervals, move them further and further apart to create a visual separation. When the candles have both completely burned out, throw the nub of the candle that represented what you wanted to release into some sort of moving water while burying the other candle representing that you own your property.

If you cannot do either of these concluding rites, then put the negativity end of that candle into a brown paper bag and dispose of it anywhere outside your living space, while taking the other candle end into any space where you can bury it. Cleansing and releasing, this ritual allows you to open a space inside yourself that you will now fill with positive and proactive energies. A season of abundance awaits!


A different kind of fashion forward form of Feng Shui this month! We’re actually going to look at the numerology inherent with the different colors of the spectrum (and the ones we choose to wear) so we can then see what colors cosmically resonate best with each one of us individually. Once you find that important information out, you know, which color best synergizes with your personal and individual numerology, you will then have another proactive tool in your powerful, positive and proverbial closet to reference when deciding what to wear to important celebrations, occasions and events!

Okay, so, first things first. This theory maintains that colors correspond with numbers depending on your full date of birth, and then what that dominant number is. Once you know that number and the color that activates the energies inherent in it, you will have given yourself a gift that really does keep on giving. Wearing a color that resonates and responds to your personal numerology can also increase your life force, or what we call your life Chi. So not only will others notice how damn good you look, but you’ll own it as well!

So, now, how do you figure out your personal number? Just add all the numbers of your birthday together and then keep boiling them down until you are left with just one number. Add the day, the month and the year together to reach one final number. Now add all those numbers together individually and until adding the numbers together results as a single digit. For example, my son’s birthday is November 4, 1995. So I would add the 11 representing his November birth month to the 4 that represents the day he was born. 11 + 4 = 15. I would then take that 15 and add it to the sum resulting from adding 1 + 9 + 9 +5 together, representing his birth year. 1 + 9 + 9 + 5 = 24. Now taking the first results, I add that 15 to 24 and get 39. Needing a single digit number, I now add 3 + 9 and get 12. 1 + 2 = 3 and, so, 3 is his final numerology number. The color most associated and that will activate and adjust powerful and positive energies associated with the number 3 is green!

Green, according to Feng Shui and many other traditions, is one of the most cooling, calming and healing colors to wear. It is filled with feelings of peace as well as emotional balance and harmony. Wearing green can elicit other feelings of relaxation, rejuvenation, regeneration, concentration, compassion and contentment. Green can also exponentially increase feelings of self-esteem, self-awareness and self-worth for the wearer whose numerological expression is the number 3! Imagine what wearing this color could then do for a number 3 person going on a first date or even a job interview? The opportunities are endless! Gives a whole new meaning to the phrase ‘the wearin’ o the green’ especially for those who carry that number 3 in their aura!

For now, figure out your personal color number and next month I’ll share all the other numbers/colors and what they can mean to and for you! .


It might be the month to head back to school or to usher in those first full days of autumn as that Equinox happens at harvest time too, but for many of us when we think of September we also think of ragweed along with spores from barley, wheat and corn as well. Agh! Allergies! Again!

Seasonal allergies suck. No doubt about it. But there are ways to protect and even prevent if you really want to try to avoid those autumn allergy blues. Obviously, wearing a mask over your mouth and nose when doing any outdoor gardening/work can help you to avoid allergies associated with exposure to pollen and weeds. You can actually build your immunity to airborne pollens and weeds by taking bee pollen internally, but only if you get same from a local hive or beekeeper. Start slowly though as incidence has shown that some of us are even allergic to this tremendous remedy as well. Three granules taken once a day for a few days will allow you enough opportunity to see if you have any adverse reaction. After the first three or four days, if you think you’re good to go then go ahead and increase the dosage to 10 granules. Then, after a week or so at that dosage, go ahead and slowly increase to a quarter then a half and finally to a full teaspoon a day.

Again, this dosage increase has to happen slowly and over time. You can certainly just dissolve this antidote in your mouth or you can put it in drinks or even sprinkle into your morning cereal. Bee pollen has long been considered one of nature’s perfect foods as well as a perfect alternative allergy remedy from nature’s pharmacopia. As an aside (just because I found this really interesting): bee pollen is also one of the foods found on Earth that cannot be duplicated in a laboratory!

Now, speaking of local honey; some allergy sufferers have also found instant and immediate relief from allergy attacks by chewing a once-inch square of honeycomb. As far as I’ve been told, it’s pretty tasty and really efficacious. You simply swallow the honey and continue to chew the gummy, waxy substance for about 10 or so minutes until you dispose of it. About the same time you should be finding sweet relief.

And finally, if ragweed is your allergy of choice, then you are well advised to stay away from and avoid eating cantaloupe, honeydew and watermelons. Zucchini and cucumber are all the fruits and vegetables that are said to mimic misery-making symptoms associated with ragweed allergies as well.

No more ‘achoo’ for you, honey! Honey being the operative word here!

These are times when we’re all invited to move inward in order to explore the depths of our own selves and beings. When we go underground, we are given opportunities to discover things about ourselves that will then show us all the possibilities that await. The New Moon in September as well as the Harvest Full one are some of the most powerful celestial events that occur in terms of helping us attain our needs and offering us secret gifts.

This recipe involving carrots promises to bring out a hidden talent you have that exemplifies all you have to share with the world. Therefore, the magical part of this deliciousness also promises restored self-confidence, esteem and a sense of worthiness that is grounded, rooted and ever growing. Simply delicious!

Serves 4

1 pound fresh carrots (8 large)
4 1/2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
2 tablespoons dry white wine
2 teaspoons white wine vinegar
1 tablespoon fresh parsley, minced
1 tablespoon fresh thyme, minced
1 quarter cup freshly grated Asiago cheese
Sea salt and white pepper to taste.

Pre-heat the oven to 400 degrees. Peel and place the carrots in a baking dish that is lightly greased with olive oil. Brush the carrots with the rest of the oil and roast for 15 minutes or until the carrots start to turn a light, golden brown. Slice the carrots and place them atop a serving dish before drizzling the wine and vinegar over the carrots. Sprinkle on the cheese and then add the fresh herbs as well. Finally, season minimally with the salt and pepper and serve warm.


Recently I was interviewed by a website dedicated to making the travel experience infinitely easier for all of us. I answered questions about the critical and non-negotiable cures I travel with whenever I leave the comfort and safety of my own space. For this month, I wanted to share some of these tried and true suggestions with you.

I might indeed be sure to put some salt in an open container in my hotel room in order to collect any sort of negative chi or energy left by anyone staying in that same room before me. Or I might also hang a good fortune coin cure on the inside of my hotel room door handle to ensure that my travels are filled with great fortune and good luck. I might also hang a small crystal over my bed so that I might find success and opportunity along my way. And I even might bring out a small statue of Buddha to bring blessing and boons on my journeys.

But the one thing I never, ever forget to do is to chant a mantra that I learned a long time ago. It helps to avert any wrong timing or astrological anomalies along your way, as well as overcome bad timing or, even worse, bad situations that can be caused by outside influences. Rather, it’s said, by reciting this mantra 108 times before starting your trip and then referring back to it frequently while traveling, only auspicious and happy times (meetings, dates, interviews, etc) will occur. All I can say is that I never leave home without it! So, here now, the magic mantra:


I am quite sure that the teacher who taught me this had learned it from the Feng Shui Grande Doyenne, Lillian Too, and so I pay her homage for sharing her secrets to a well-traveled life with all the rest of us!


Back to school? That’s right, it’s that time again. Let’s face it: returning to school, whether at age eight or 18 or even 80, can always stir some serious stress. Therefore I thought that this month we might look at making any student’s transition a whole lot easier but entirely effective at getting the good grades as well. It’s probably most critical to note here that the bedroom can totally and completely impact study and concentration habits, both for better and for worse until death you and your student do part! A child’s sleeping environment, regardless that same kid’s age, can create either great and supportive energies or stultifying ones, as they navigate social, studious and emotional growth. Let’s concentrate on what brings the former while ameliorating any chance of the latter, shall we?

First, place a globe of any size in the Knowledge corner of the bedroom. This globe of the world is a symbol that can and will promote and sustain a healthy social growth as well as an interest in worldly affairs. On a far deeper and powerful level, the globe grounds the child.

By placing a globe inside the Knowledge gua, you are also adding great energy or Chi to the child’s (remember I said any age!) academic development and progress while also nurturing their own accomplishments. Trust me, I’ve seen Ds turn to high Bs with no other explanation but that this globe turned serious scholarly intentions around.

Now, go ahead and put something proactive and positively terrific in the achievement accomplishment area of this same room, or the space often referred to as the Fame arena. It’s so important to always visually remind any student of the power of their potential as well as the possible too. Displaying such symbols as artwork, trophies, merit awards, letters of recommendation or any representations of achievement will underscore and uber support a sense of esteem, confidence and worth. And that will really make the grade!

Using primarily blues and greens in the bedroom fosters a feeling of peace, balance, serenity and calm while also lending a feeling of growth, health and healing to the mix as well.

Putting some or all of these actions into that same sleeping space will make for a more awake student -- on every conceivable level! And that rates an “A” in my book!
