Soul mate theories have been hanging around the water cooler for ages - all the way back to ancient Greece and beyond, there has been talk about soul mate reunions. Plato theorized that human beings originally had four legs and four arms and that the God, Zeus was so threatened by their power, he split them in two, condemning them to a life of eternally looking for their other half!
It's a parable and we shouldn't take this story literally lest it neatly plugs into our fears that we are incomplete without another person. One take away in this story is the reunion piece, the inner knowing that we all have that there is someone perfect for us and we for them, so perfect that we will become of one body, mind and spirit. Personally, the thing I love about this myth is the suggestion that by finding our beloved partner, we grow spiritually powerful. We can touch our own Divinity, together. After all, the King of Heaven, Zeus, was threatened by their joint power. Maybe heaven isn't such a far stretch for two people who are soul mates.
But no one needs to be sold on attracting a soul mate, right? Soul mates get great press. We all want to know how to get there, how to attract our soul mate.

I believe that, just as Gloria Steinem suggested that we become the men we want to marry, we also need to become our own best soul mate. Need hints? I believe soul -and- mate meet in the word 'soul'. Soul has distinct quality of soulfulness, tenderness and is identifiable by the way it makes you feel warm and good inside. It is the secret ingredient in life, you know it when you taste, touch, feel and experience it. In the presence of soulfulness, you feel cared for, nurtured and loved. In becoming our own soul mate, that's the feeling we're aiming for (that's also how we want to feel in the presence of our Beloved). In the whole business of attracting your soul mate, being soulful actually cuts right to the truth of the matter. All we really need to know how to do is to be soulful. To recognize our soul mate, we need to first recognize what soul is, and is not. We need to learn how to be soulful in life, and also be soulful with the ones we're with.
