February 4: Seeing in the Dark

January 29, 2021

The moon is square Jupiter at 12:40 a.m.
Just after midnight, the Scorpio moon squares off with Jupiter in Aquarius, magnifying emotional intensity. This is an excellent transit for spiritual exploration or investigating mysteries, although we do run the risk of imagining danger and intrigue behind every corner even when there is none.
Our tendency to scrutinize the dark side of human behavior under the Scorpio moon is amplified here, so an interest in conspiratorial activities might loom large in our consciousness. We can learn much about our own nature now by remaining philosophically inquisitive, but our passions can easily lead us astray, so exercise some caution.

The moon is opposite Mars at 6:51 a.m.
In the morning, the moon’s opposition to Mars in Taurus sees us grasping for an outlet to demonstrate courage—even if we have to fabricate such an outlet to prove our mettle. With the moon traveling through the sign of Mars’ arcane rulership, our feelings are eclipsed, making us susceptible to putting ourselves into dangerous situations because we lack an accurate barometer of pain and can’t see when we are pushing ourselves past our limits.
For this reason, feats of strength are possible, but the chance of injury or overexertion is high. Tolerance for pain is not a strength, it’s an act of psychological suppression that can do real damage not only to our bodies, but to our relationships if we view starting fights as the strong thing to do.

The moon is square the sun at 9:37 a.m.
Mid-morning, the last quarter moon helps us to assess the relevance of goals brought to manifestation during January 28’s Leo full moon. At this point in the lunar cycle, we begin to pare down and declutter our mental spaces to make room for the intentions we will set during the next new moon. We are reimagining and readjusting our priorities, actions that help immensely per the Scorpio moon’s affinity for transmutation. As the light of the moon recedes, our eyes begin to acclimate to the increasing darkness, and with this, we might better see the dormant, yet fertile contents of our own mind.

The moon is trine Neptune at 3:11 p.m.
In the afternoon, the moon trines Neptune, stimulating sensitivity to the numinous. This is an ideal transit for communing with the “beyond” through divination practices, or creating art or music—however, in a state of relaxation, we may opt not to use this influence for anything especially productive. Meditation and mindfulness help us cultivate presence and provide new insights into old memories. As we prioritize rest and the opportunity to recharge, we additionally become more compassionate towards others.

The moon is square Mercury retrograde at 10:27 p.m.
Come the night, the moon squares off with Mercury retrograde in Aquarius, muddying thoughts and feelings. What the Scorpio moon feels deeply and intuitively, Mercury in Aquarius intellectualizes, scrambling our sentiments. We may withhold what is on our minds, believing we will be misunderstood. The reality is, through no fault of our own, that we very well may be at this time! Yet given the Scorpio moon’s penchant towards brooding, we may be just as misunderstood for what we do say as what we do not. Choose your battles wisely.
