July’s Astrology Is More Powerful Than Most Months — Here’s How to Use It

July is the month many astrologers have been highlighting, and for good reason. While the energy is slowing down because we’ll experience three planets station retrograde including Mercury, prepare for sudden events, major life breakthroughs and forward momentum in the vibrant sign of Leo and humanity-driven Aquarius.

Mars conjunct Uranus in Gemini

As the month kicks off, Mars, the planet of action and drive, will form an exact connection with Uranus, celestial disruption and shocks, in the sign of Gemini. This is the first Mars–Uranus conjunction we’ll experience in Gemini during its seven year cycle. Gemini is ruled by the planet Mercury and governs your local community, short trips, communication, and thought. On or around this day (especially during Mercury retrograde) it’s important to watch out for accidents while commuting locally, triggering through text, or explosive verbal conflict. Not to fear-monger but just be mindful as you navigate this. 

Neptune retrograde in Aries

A few days after the unpredictable Mars and Uranus conjunction, Neptune stations retrograde in Aries. Neptune governs dreams, illusions, and a higher octave of creativity. This occurs until December 12, and Neptune retrograde influences the veil over certain areas of your life. This is an introspective time that’s influencing you to change certain areas of your life that you haven’t seen the truth in prior to the retrograde. It’s a moment of self-empowerment and going after your passions and dreams as an individual. This is also a time of raw and authentic creativity, so start the project you’ve always desired!

Venus enters Virgo

Venus, governing love, relationships, and the material world, enters into its “fall” in discerning and practical Virgo. Fall means that Venus is not in its comfort zone, and love and relationship matters take a serious turn after a few weeks of fun-filled fling energy in Leo. The heat simmers down and you’ll want to define the relationship more, deciding whether it’ll stick or it’s time to go. Finances and material worth is also going to be under scrutiny; for instance balancing budgets and looking at the details versus spending for pleasure.

New Moon in Cancer

The new moon in Cancer begins a new lunar cycle mid-month, and the moon and sun will join together in darkness with Mercury retrograde. Revisiting family matters from the past or focusing on your home or private sanctuary could manifest during this time. Jupiter in Leo is also forming a close out-of-sign conjunction with the Cancer new moon, which may also bring new opportunities and a positive breakthrough from the past that you thought slipped away. 

Sun enters Leo

Leo season begins July 22 when the sun enters its home in the sign of the Lion. This is ushering a powerful season of forward momentum and breakthroughs in creative self-expression, leadership, authenticity, and shifting how the collective wants to shine and command the stage of life.

Mercury Direct in Cancer

Mercury stations direct in the emotional water sign of Cancer, closing an introspective and reflective period. The healing of ancestry or family may have been a focus over the past month. The retrograde haze starts to clear, and communication begins to pick up. Mercury retrograde is like a bell curve, with the post-retrograde shadow period being the downward slope. This will last until August 7, so expect there to still be some of the same themes present until that time.

Saturn retrograde in Aries

Saturn then joins the retrograde party in Aries on July 26. Saturn governs wisdom, age, and harsh lessons, and when it stations retrograde, this can start to subside and turn inwards. If this is your Saturn return (late 20’s and 50’s!) you may feel relief for the next five months it’s retrograde. The best way to work with this Saturn retrograde is to make decisions from an empowered space that aligns with the individual you are becoming. Self-mastery is key.

Jupiter-Sun Cazimi in Leo

Jupiter, the planet of luck, growth, and expansion, is also forming a powerful cazimi with the sun (in the heart of the sun) a couple of hours before the Aquarius full moon, and this is an auspicious connection in astrology. It’s when a planet aligns exactly with the sun, bringing clarity and power. Jupiter is supporting the Leo sun in its strength, amplifying visibility, confidence, growth, and showstopping shine. 

Full Moon in Aquarius

This full moon is especially notable because, for the first time since the 1700’s, both Jupiter in Leo, and Pluto in Aquarius are involved. Pluto is sitting with the Aquarius moon, intensifying themes of power, transformation, collective change, and who or what is rising now. Jupiter is with the Leo sun, coming off of a beneficial cazimi.

On a collective level, this can correspond with a new wave of public figures, artists, leaders, and voices emerging more fully, especially those whose authenticity has a wider effect on the collective. On a personal level, this can look like a creative breakthrough, a major opening, or the realization that it is time to stop hiding and step more fully into your work, your gifts, and your path.

While it starts off extremely internal and focused on the past, July is a doorway to an entirely different life and future ahead. Release the old and embrace the new!
