The New Aquarius Moon Is All about Giving Power to the People

February 8, 2021

On February 11, 2021 (11:06 AM Pacific Time), there will be a new moon at 23°17’ of Aquarius.

“Power to the people!” is this new moon’s rallying cry. Whether we’re uniting around a common cause, realizing a shared creative vision, or simply enjoying each other’s company, one thing’s for sure: We’re stronger together. And with no fewer than seven celestial bodies currently gathered in Aquarius, right now the universe is echoing this theme.

As the moon and sun align in the Water-Bearer’s sign, we’re focused on creating community. But it’s not just as simple as finding your tribe. It’s about envisioning new and better ways to connect with those outside your inner circle.

What Does the New Moon in Aquarius Mean?

This doesn’t mean we have to downplay our differences—if anything, Aquarius encourages us to accentuate them. Still, with this new moon conjunct Pallas Athena (asteroid goddess of wisdom and strategy), it’s important to pick our battles. There’s a time for going against the grain, and a time for going with the flow.

Fortunately, a Venus/Jupiter conjunction in Aquarius makes it easier to get along. We feel a greater sense of love and goodwill—not just toward the people we relate to personally, but also those we might typically see as alien to us.
Venus conjunct Jupiter also makes our new-moon intentions more magnetic. Whatever we’re fixing our focus upon has a stronger-than-average chance of materializing now. So we’ll want to think long and hard about what we’re manifesting. Ideally, it’s something that serves the greater good.

Of course, our personal ideas of the public interest may be radically different from someone else’s. And this conflict is reflected in the square that’s currently building between this lunation’s two rulers: Saturn in Aquarius and Uranus in Taurus.

Saturn (the traditional ruler) reinforces collective responsibility. He reminds us that, while membership in society has its benefits, it also has a cost. Sometimes this means accepting certain limits on our individual freedom and expression.

Uranus, on the other hand, is Aquarius’ modern ruler. And he’s much less concerned with fitting in than with fighting the powers that be. Uranus is constantly subverting expectations and challenging accepted social norms—and often, this comes as a breath of fresh air.

This Saturn/Uranus square operates as a system of checks and balances between two distinctly Aquarian energies. It challenges and motivates us to find innovative, workable solutions. With this year-long aspect (repeating February 17, June 14, and December 24), necessity really is the mother of invention.

Saturn also sextiles Chiron in Aries (another recurring aspect, exact on February 9, June 23, and November 26). This presents opportunities for both personal and collective healing—but only if we’re willing to do our share of the work.

Perhaps the best way to start is by reexamining our hard-and-fast opinions, and reimagining situations from other people’s perspectives. With Mercury retrograde in Aquarius until February 20, and squaring Mars at this new moon, we’re also challenged to rethink our media habits—especially social media.

We don’t have to give up our own point of view, or sell out our deeply-held convictions. But it’s critical that we learn to understand each other better. Fortunately, Mercury’s conjunctions with Venus and Jupiter in the coming days facilitate communicating with kindness and good faith.
