Radical Change Is Inevitable Under The New Moon in Libra
On October 16, 2020 (12:31 PM Pacific Daylight Time), the new moon will be at 23°53’ of Libra.
“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee.” Whether or not we’re entering the boxing ring at this new moon, we might take our cues from the great Muhammad Ali and adopt this as our fighting style.
Not that we’re looking for a fight—Libra is, after all, the peacemaker of the zodiac. But as the Libra moon opposes retrograde Mars in Aries, the fight is likely to come looking for us. And as much as we’d prefer to avoid confrontation, that won’t always be possible. Fortunately, with Libra’s style and grace, we can rise above the fray.
Still, we’ll have to balance style with substance. While some differences are easy to smooth over, the ones we’re grappling with now demand something deeper than surface solutions. We may need to take a more direct, hard-hitting approach—even if that’s uncomfortable. After all, Libra isn’t just about being nice. At its best, it’s a fearless advocate for equality and justice.
What Does the October New Moon in Libra Mean?
This applies to both personal relationships and society as a whole. But the predominance of planets in Capricorn at this new moon puts social justice front and center. Saturn, Pluto, Jupiter, and Pallas in the sign of the “establishment” make structural, systemic change inevitable. But we have the power—and responsibility—to direct these forces in wise and strategic ways, toward outcomes that benefit everyone.
First, though, we’ll need to build consensus on what a more beautiful, balanced society should look like. And with the moon, sun, and Mars putting pressure on the Capricorn planets, that’s easier said than done right now. Common ground may be hard to come by, but it’s also worth fighting for.
Fortunately, a trine between Pallas in Capricorn and lunation ruler Venus in Virgo supports us in picking our battles. Our actions and intentions at this new moon are guided by love, wisdom, and a healthy dose of common sense. We’re advised to focus on what’s truly useful, what will improve our own and each other’s lives in tangible, measurable ways.
This won’t always be the thing that looks the prettiest, or sounds the sweetest. After all, Venus in Virgo has never been known for sugar-coating things. She encourages us to eat our vegetables, take our medicine, and tend to the nitty-gritty details of life—which is often the most loving thing to do.
Still, Venus’ opposition with retrograde Neptune in Pisces (exact October 18) makes it tempting to fall back on less-earthy expressions of love. Sentiments like “love and light” or “thoughts and prayers” can be genuinely heartfelt and meaningful. But in and of themselves, they’re simply not enough. At this new moon, we must back them up with action—otherwise, they’re just pretty words.
