The Retrograde Vortex of the Past Is Here and Won’t End Until June 2027
Every year, most planets in the solar system appear to move retrograde. Mercury, the planet of the mind and communication, does so most often: usually three to four times a year, for about three weeks at a time. Mercury retrograde has become notorious in pop culture, often serving as an excuse to blame life’s hiccups and confusion on the universe instead of taking responsibility for our own mishaps.
The outer planets—Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto—also retrograde every year, for stretches that can last five to six months. Their cycles tend to unfold more gradually, bringing longer periods of transformation to our lives and the world at large.
Two other retrogrades can feel especially personal, though neither happens every year. Venus retrograde occurs about every eighteen months and lasts roughly six weeks. Mars retrograde takes place about every twenty-six months and lasts around three months. When these cycles overlap with Mercury retrograde—or with one another—their effects can be hard to ignore. You enter what I’ve come to call “the vortex of the past.”
What Is the Vortex of the Past in Astrology?
The personal planets affect your life in noticeable ways. Mercury is tied to technology, communication, travel, and daily affairs. Venus aligns with relationships, pleasure, beauty, and, to some degree, money and possessions. Mars gives you energy, strength, and momentum. It also speaks to how you pursue your desires and navigate sexual or competitive relationships. When these planets appear to move backward in the sky, familiar parts of life can feel scattered or confusing. Situations may unfold in ways you didn’t expect.
The retrograde itself is usually the most noticeable part of the cycle, but astrologers also consider the periods before and after it. The pre-shadow begins when a planet first reaches the degree it will later return to during its retrograde. During this stage, you may notice hints of what the cycle will ask you to address.
Next comes the retrograde, when the planet appears to move backward through the zodiac. Finally, it stations direct and begins moving forward again. This post-shadow lasts until the planet crosses the degree where it first stationed retrograde. It can be a time to review what shifted and put the pieces of your life back together.
Every couple of years, these personal-planet cycles overlap, drawing your attention to the past in a major way. Situations, relationships, projects, and plans may reappear. Some deserve a second look and a chance at new life; others return so you can learn from them and let them go. You may find yourself retracing an old journey, searching for the answer or revelation you missed the first time.
During Mercury retrograde, you might uncover new information or renegotiate a plan. Venus retrograde may prompt you to look again at a current or former relationship and better understand your emotional or intimate needs. Mars retrograde can ask you to examine how you use your energy and pursue your goals, personally or professionally.
The vortex of the past offers a chance to review, reflect, revisit, or reignite what matters to your evolution. It may remind you that your story doesn’t follow one straight path. These cycles can also bring karmic situations or relationships to the surface. Karma is the belief that our actions have consequences that echo forward. You may have an opportunity to make amends for a past mistake—or enjoy the rewards of choices you made with care.
If you’ve been hoping to reconnect with “the one who got away,” revive a project, or revisit something you once loved, the door may be open. You still have to walk through it and find out whether the ashes can become a flame again. If they can’t, you can bury that chapter and make room for the new.
When Is the Vortex of the Past in 2026 and 2027?
This vortex began on August 31, 2026, when Venus entered its pre-shadow. In autumn 2026, Venus and Mercury will both retrograde and complete their shadow phases. Mars enters its own pre-shadow in November, then retrogrades through the first quarter of 2027. Its post-shadow lasts until June 2027.
Pay attention to where you stand now and where you’ve been. The situations that emerge during these cycles can help you see your progress and recognize what still needs your attention. You don’t have to run from the ghosts of the past, whether they bring regret or a welcome reminder of who you used to be. Facing them can help you decide what belongs in your future.
Venus retrogrades through Scorpio and Libra, bringing collective questions about partnership, intimacy, trust, and vulnerability. Mercury retrogrades in Scorpio, encouraging a closer look at what lies beneath the surface. Mars retrogrades through Virgo and Leo, asking you to revisit your routines, responsibilities, and passions—and how you balance them.
