Mercury in Scorpio Is About to Bring Buried Feelings to the Surface

September 30, 2026

Mercury departs calm and collected Libra on September 30 and plunges into the deep waters of Scorpio for more than two months, thanks to its upcoming retrograde cycle, which begins in Scorpio on October 25.

In Libra, Mercury tends toward diplomacy, balance, and harmonious connection. When the planet of communication enters Scorpio, however, the tone changes. Mercury in Scorpio doesn’t really do surface-level. Mental focus shifts toward deeper conversations and searching for the truth, no matter the cost. Over the next few months, thoughts and conversations may center around themes of trust, intimacy, shared resources, and power dynamics. Quite a change from the prim and proper energy of Libra!

During this transit, and especially during Mercury’s retrograde in the sign, we’re encouraged to ask better questions, look beneath the surface, and connect with our own truths.

Scorpio is becoming a major hot spot in the sky this fall and into the winter, making this sector of your chart and life a major area of focus, attention, and change through the end of the year. Venus entered Scorpio on September 10, will station retrograde on October 3, and continue her backspin in Scorpio until October 25. Though she finishes out her retrograde in Libra, she will return to Scorpio on December 4, ending the year in the sign. Mercury arrives on September 30, and because of its own retrograde cycle, won’t leave Scorpio until December, either.

So, whatever house Scorpio rules in your chart is in the spotlight through the end of the year. Themes of passion, truth, and intensity are more likely to emerge in this area of life. We’re being called to look at what lies beneath the surface, and face whatever that is with courage and honesty.

Mercury will make a few important aspects in Scorpio before it begins its retrograde journey. Shortly after its entrance into the sign, things get a bit heated. Mercury will square both Mars, freshly in Leo, and Pluto in Aquarius from October 1 through October 5.

Mercury acts like a sponge, absorbing the energy of both the sign it’s transiting and the aspects it makes to other planets in the sky. These squares can color communication with a harsher, more biting quality. Thoughts and conversations may become more intense, passionate, and direct. Buried frustrations or resentments may surface and need to be talked about. Confrontation is more likely, as are secrets being revealed or uncovered.

This isn’t necessarily an indication that everyone will be at odds, but people may be more emotional and reactive, and communication will carry more weight. Try to pause before reacting and allow these aspects to reveal what needs to be said or confronted—but maybe not acted on immediately. Mercury goes retrograde later in the month and gives us a helpful window to assess what needs to be said, and to whom.

Be sure to check the houses in your chart ruled by both Leo and Aquarius, as this will give you a fuller picture of where this energy will be expressing itself in your life.

Help comes quickly in the form of a helpful conjunction to Venus, also in Scorpio, from October 6 to 7. This short but welcome aspect can soothe hurt feelings or help soften difficult emotional topics brought up by Mercury’s squares to Mars and Pluto. This is lovely energy for connecting more deeply with friends or partners, clarifying feelings, and getting clear about our values. The Mercury-Venus conjunction happens right before Venus goes retrograde the following day, bringing our attention to relationships, pleasure, and desire, themes that will continue unfolding throughout the fall and winter.

Mercury’s journey through Scorpio asks us to dig deeper and connect more intimately—to look beneath the surface of our connections, as well as ourselves. We’re supported in having important conversations, addressing buried issues, and acknowledging latent desires. With so much planetary activity in Scorpio through the end of the year, it’s time to get comfortable lifting the curtain and addressing what we find.
